69 and 70 harness swap?

my 70 had the harness chopped up pretty good. but I've got a really nice 69 harness. aside from the idiot lights, is there anything that would make this idea not work? jim

You really need to get the correct harness.

Re: 69 and 70 harness swap?

I just looked at the under hood harness. looks like everything fits. I'm going to see if the dash harness fits. the ignition switch, light and wiper switch is all the same. I think if the turn indicators work, I'll be golden. I dont care about the idiot lights since I'm sticking gauges in the car. And the best part......I've already got a nice 69 harness. jim

Re: 69 and 70 harness swap?

I do know....... A 1971 under hood harness will not work in a 70. Also a 1971 A/C harness will not work in a 70. YES you can make anything work.
My point is ,, Its not a plug and play.

Re: 69 and 70 harness swap?

actually a 70 and 71 harness works. it's the 72 harness that doesnt work. I'm leaving out the AC stuff. I just need the blower to run. but not really worried about that
it looks like the wipers, headlight, dimmer, ignition all swap fine. the bulbs for the dash lights are different. I'm hoping the turn indicators hook up the same with the 70 column. If not, I've got the 69 column I can install. jim

if I had a 70 harness I would use it, I cant justify the cost of a new harness for this el Camino. of course I've tossed, sold or given away all these worthless sweep dashes and harnesses, now that I could use one, they aren't available
a buddy is dropping off a sweep dash tomorrow but no harness. jim

I just went through trying to find a turn signal plug for my 70. They're the same up through '76.

Re: 69 and 70 harness swap?

I'm pretty sure if 69-70 harnesses aren't the same, any differences will be minor.

Just set the bulkhead connectors side by side and compare every wire and every cavity.

When re-purposing an old harness, peal back the entire harness and inspect every wire and every splice. Use the correct non-stick harness tape when you're done-it'll look nice too.

Re: 69 and 70 harness swap?

thanks Dan, but I'm trying to low buck this thing. if this thing becomes a total fail, I'll definitely send you a PM on your harness. to think I sold a complete 70 sweep dash with harness for 5 bucks.
I did hook up the ign switch, light switch, turn signal etc. looks like it's going to work out pretty good. jim

Re: 69 and 70 harness swap?

Gotta love having a pile of mystery parts. The dash that came in tje back of the el camino is a 71 or early 72 dash. I found what I thought was a 70 harness but after messing with it for a hour, its not even a chevelle harness. The 69 harness needs the signal lights wired to the harness. Also the 69 harness the dash lights the signal lights go thru a block connector. The 71 harness really needs the headlight split for the quad headlights.
Next plan is to install the 71 harness I think I have and use the 69 Underwood harness. Just move the pins to tje right position. Jim

Re: 69 and 70 harness swap?

and to top it all off. I realized the 1970 diagram I copied was for a monte carlo or SS round gauge dash. been studying the fuse block and under dash harness and then realize its the wrong one! The joy of being frugal. jim

Re: 69 and 70 harness swap?

quick update, it works!
headlights work, key works, car starts and shuts off. 14.5 volts to the battery while running. need to build the bridge harness from the fuse box to the rear harness. it's been cut. but all the colors of the wires are there. the gen light kicks off when the motor starts.
now onto the other issues in finding. like the lower bearing on the column is missing and found on the floor, the column firewall mount is home made sheet metal with no clamp (found one) the chrome on the key switch just fell off. might as well just toss another column into the car. jim
