I have a zz4 crate motor with an 11 clutch and a 168 tooth flywheel and a 621 ss396 bell housing that I am in the process of converting from an automatic to a 4 speed in a 72 Chevelle
I have tried to find a starter that will fit this basic combo but to no luck
I have tried a 1972 Chevelle manual starter the alum housing will not fit period.
I have tried a Delco 10496873 starter cross-referenced to an Autozone DL3510MS will fit but not go all the way in to bolt up
I saw this on a website for zz4 crate motors no work
The original for that bell housing has an iron nose. The aluminum nose ones from that era don't fit inside. I've never tried a pmgr of a 96-99 vortec. I'd be curious to know if it fits. But I guess if no one knows I'll find out this winter. I have to assemble a drivetrain for a 71' this winter for a guy.
Same bell and flywheel on my 66. I used a Summit Racing mini starter with staggered bolt holes and it fit fine.
