starter wont fit im going crazy

I have a zz4 crate motor with an 11 clutch and a 168 tooth flywheel and a 621 ss396 bell housing that I am in the process of converting from an automatic to a 4 speed in a 72 Chevelle

I have tried to find a starter that will fit this basic combo but to no luck

I have tried a 1972 Chevelle manual starter the alum housing will not fit period.

I have tried a Delco 10496873 starter cross-referenced to an Autozone DL3510MS will fit but not go all the way in to bolt up
I saw this on a website for zz4 crate motors no work

Any help greatly appreciated thank you

Re: starter wont fit im going crazy

Industry number 3689 is original. There are later PMGR starters that will work too.

Re: starter wont fit im going crazy

The 3510 is for a 168 tooth automatic transmission. 3689 is for a 168 tooth stick bell housing, but will work on either.

Re: starter wont fit im going crazy

The zz4 crate motor is not an issue ?

The 621 bell housing is not an issue ?

You feel the 3689 origional will slide right in

I have been searching online and I am hearing the starter should be for a 93 to 97 camaro

Little confused

chevrolet.com/content/dam/chevrolet/zz4-engine-long-block-installation-guide-pdf

Starter information is listed on page 8. Standard and PMGR starters are both listed.

Buy the correct new bolts for either starter.

The original for that bell housing has an iron nose. The aluminum nose ones from that era don't fit inside. I've never tried a pmgr of a 96-99 vortec. I'd be curious to know if it fits. But I guess if no one knows I'll find out this winter. I have to assemble a drivetrain for a 71' this winter for a guy.

Re: starter wont fit im going crazy

Same bell and flywheel on my 66. I used a Summit Racing mini starter with staggered bolt holes and it fit fine.

66 Malibu Coupe, home rebuilt 350. Took me 39 years to get her!
