Question Please help identifying shortage in the dash

Hi all,

I have been blessed with a 1971 Chevelle SS. It was my dads pride and joy and was almost complete but he has since tragically passed away. I am eager to complete it, as the only things left are the dash, ac, and interior touches.

The dash was smoking upon running and seems to have a shortage somewhere. Does anyone have any idea where I should start to identify where it's at and what is causing it? I know little about electrical. A friend tried bypassing where they believed the short was and did not seem work. Any help on where I should start is appreciated.

Here are some pictures

Should I start by replacing that electrical gasket and maybe I can see where it starts or something?

Not sure what you mean by electrical gasket. Could you possibly post a picture?

Re: Please help identifying shortage in the dash

It looks like part of the printed circuit for the dash shorted out. If that is the case, then this should be the correct part for a 1971 Chevelle with round gauges: https://www.ecklerschevelle.com/chev...1970-1972.html

1971 Malibu, factory buckets/full gauges/console, 377 roller cammed small block, Turbo 400, 3.42 10 bolt posi (Buick), - All your base are belong to us.

Re: Please help identifying shortage in the dash

Inspect the trace on the PCB. Make SURE the white wire that is inserted into it is connected on the same trace at both ends.
