starting situation

Hey guys, I have a higher compression BBC and cannot get it to start. I got the battery checked and it is OK. Perhaps my starter is weak? OR do I need one if them hancy AGM batteries? Here is some vids..

What I have...

Re: starting situation

Kris it sounds to me like a low Battery / not enough Power to turn it over fast enough

Starter sounds like it is doing it's job in winging it over just not Fast enough

Do you have a Booster Pack

if not I have 2 and could drop by with them

Re: starting situation

Hey Kirk, I might take you up on that offer! I tried adding more juice by using a smaller battery charger and it's activate function (starting mode) but it didn't improve anything. I have heard that you really need a large floor style charger to boost up the amps enough.

I am thinking these are some things I could try;

-use your booster pack and see if it makes a difference (I have a booster pack but I think it is dead now)

-borrow my friends Hitachi starter that he had on the current engine and see if it turns over better. This starter actually worked on this exact engine. So this would let me know if it is the starter

-go to Costco and buy a battery of similar size (900 cold cranking amps and wire it in parallel with booster cables. If it doesn't work return the battery.

-run battery directly to the starter using booster cables

-perform voltage drop test again

Re: starting situation

Are you running locked timing? If so, try a points distributor with the mechanical advance springs removed. It will retard during start and then go to full advance once spinning at idle..

The points distributor triggering a CD box like the Accel, MSD will work just as good as an hei..

Re: starting situation

Hello Jeff, it is a locked out HEI unit. I am trying to turn over the starter and build up engine speed and then hit the IGN button..
I have a older Crane IGN box that I could buy a IGN retard module.

Re: starting situation

"Locked out timing", and, the voltmeter goes straight to zero when the starter is actuated. No wonder.

Re: starting situation

What do you have for battery cables? My son has been fighting a slow crank hot start issue in his 11:1 327. He had already upgraded starter, bought a new battery, installed a brand F solenoid, all to no avail. Recently he upgraded his battery cables from parts store quality ones to custom made 0 gauge. The problem has been solved with that so far as we can tell.

Re: starting situation

Hey guys, no news..I wasn't at my place for most of last week..I will fist try the other starter and see how that goes..I am hoping to pick it up later this week. If that doesn't work, then perhaps I will borrow your jump pack Kirk. ..I guess Jump packs typically have around 300-700 amps? Right now my battery is a 78DT model group with around 800 cold cranking amps. The jump pack might give me the extra amps to see if it is a battery problem.
Perhaps I am low on amps, the guy who had this engine before (with no starting problems) used a AGM style "red top" battery like this-
https://www.bigtimebattery.com/store...g_Battery.html
I am hoping that perhaps if I need another battery then I could just wire in another 78DT in parallel ..

The battery cables are the large welding cables. It actually turned over pretty quick on the old engine which probably had a little less compression..So, I think that perhaps the wiring is OK but I will check it again..

this is a old video of the TCI starter I was using for awhile.

The timing at this moment might be locked out but at like 12 degrees..It is a drag car so that is why it is locked out.

Re: starting situation

Well it did turn over quicker for a bit (with the new starter) but then reverted back to the slow turning over..
I will borrow Greg's "battery jump pack" and see if the additional amperage makes a difference..

Re: starting situation

Maybe too much initial timing? Try moving the timing back a little see if that helps.

Re: starting situation

Thanks Lew, I am also going to re-verify dizzy position (dizzy has been moved around quite a bit now).
I will put it at 12 degrees or so.

Re: starting situation

Hey guys, I tried Greg's 500 amp jump pack and it made a difference! I also changed starters and there wasn't a huge difference but I think I will need 2 batteries..

I never had an issue with my powermaster 9400 starter and 1 Odyssey battery. Cranked my 15:1 565 without issue.
