1967 chevelle ss deluxe horn issue

Just installed a new ss deluxe wheel for my 67 (with the two horn buttons mounted on the spokes).

The problem is that the horn doesn't blow when wheel is straight on, but blows when the steering wheel is turned sharply left or right!!!

Can anyone help me trouble shoot this problem?

Thanks, Charles

First a question, does it blow by itself when turning either direction or do you have to press the buttons on the wheel? I had the problem when it blew while turning and not pressing buttons and it was the mounting screw on the left side when wheel is off. it would ground the horn and work. Turned out to be wrong screw and the head was too tall and would touch when pressure applied while turning and make horn work. If that is not your scenario then I was no help. But still sounds like ground issues????

If not ^, then might be a dirty/worn/corroded horn ring contact. Probably have to pull the wheel, not sure if electrical cleaner can be sprayed in there. As a tip, never let contact cleaner hit old plastic parts you cannot replace, I have seen the shock (cold shrinkage) crack plastic.

Make sure the contact wire on the rag joint (or steering coupler) is intact. That may be why it only blows when the wheel is turned completing the ground circuit mechanically when the steering is turned L or R.

Yeah, the horn will blow by itself turning left or right, brand new wheel and contact hardware/screws, etc.

I'll check these suggestions out, especially the rag joint contact wire, didn't know there is one down there! Having to drive with the horns unhooked because of this problem til I fix it.

Thanks, Charles
