Back up switch

1979 ss396. 4 speed manual floor transmission. Reverse lights stay on constantly. Where is the back up switch located? And what color wires should I be looking for? Can’t find it near the linkage. Car only has a guest shifter but rear is stock. Anyone have any photos? Thank you.

Re: Back up switch

If your car was converted to a manual, the switch is on the column under the dash.

Your just jealous because you can't hear the voices!

Re: Back up switch

Is the shift collar rotated by the back drive linkage?

Re: Back up switch

At the base of steering column is a connector with several wires. You will find a pink and light green in that bundle. Those are the reverse light wires. Don't know how it is set up for an automatic but a manual originally had a back drive that was.used to activate reverse lights. Most manual cars have a plunger switch that mounts to the back side of the shifter body. When the shifter is put in reverse the lever pushes against the plunger switch which has two wires running to the pink and green that are at the base of the steering column.

Re: Back up switch

Does it have headers? If yes then you will know what happened to the backdrive. They don't work with headers.
