repro tach stuck

Hello,I just installed a complete ss dash conversion in a 72 chevelle.New dash carrier, gauges, harness, ect.....Every thing works except the tach,it seems to be stuck at now 1500 rpm.Started the car after oil change and it was at 0,started car went up to 1200 and stayed.I give it gas and the needle twitches up and not down.Car has and Hei with a tach filter all new.Is the tach junk or is there something I can do with it? I don't want to take the dash apart again, but I will if I have to.

Re: repro tach stuck

It could be mechanical - pointer pivot....or electrical. Hard to say. Maybe try & hook up a temporary points ign to see if the tach works.

Does the good one have two or three screws in the face of it?

The tach I just put in and works has two rivets on the face and a needle stop at zero. The tach that came with the gauge cluster did not.

What manufacturer Tach worked? I just rebuilt my '72 SS dash and used an OER reproduction tach (don't want the same issues after install?)

Re: repro tach stuck

Hi,again.Second tach bit the dust, stopped working after 1 1/2 days. I'm done with repro junk and not taking the dash apart again.Putting a real tach on the steering column.

With 2 Tachs failing... it seems it might have something to do with the HEI or filter?
