SMS Sale

I got an email from SMS Auto Fabrics that they're having their first sale ever, after 43 years of business. 19% off everything.

I may pull the trigger on that vinyl top that I've been waiting to buy.

Re: SMS Sale

...They left out the part where you'll receive your order in another 43 years

Seriously though, considering what I know of their business methods, sounds like a plea for an long term interest free loan from unsuspecting customers. It will still be 6-12 months to receive stuff most likely.

They should try hiring a few folks with actual customer service skills to operate their business, they wouldn't need to have a sale.

Its really too bad because they truly do have the largest stock of NOS cloth and vinyl in the country, possibly the world after a couple inventory acquisitions they made the last 2 years.

Good luck with your orders!

Same here. Wish this sale happened last year when I spent $2 grand on the original interior for the wagon. Hopefully I'll get it in this calendar year.

Ben, you sound like the voice of experience dealing with SMS. Are they very slow with shipments?

Let's just say their reputation isn't the greatest. Some here have had bad experiences. I'm expecting a long wait on my stuff, but hoping for better luck than others have had.

Re: SMS Sale

If you're ordering material a-la-carte you're going to have a descent turnaround. It's their fabricated stuff that takes years.

Re: SMS Sale

10 years ago I bought a vinyl top from them. Took about 3 months to get. Turns out they supply the material and contact out the manufacture. They don't make seat covers, just sell the material. They make door panels but need your original sill part. I've heard the door panels take a long time to get, several months. Maybe since they're having a sale, quantity of orders is down and wait times are shorter.

I'll just say that the discussions of their "sale" on Trimmer & Upholstery message boards are not nearly as nice as this one. Nobody has a good word to say.

Go read their BBB reviews to find out all you need to know about them.

If your expectations are to be billed up front, wait a year or more with zero communication or response from them, and the possibility of not getting the right materials(or defective materials) after all that then you are properly prepared to deal with them.

I waited 2 years for a set of 67 door panels. They arrived (after many calls) and were beautiful, except a seam had already popped. I called and they said, "Yeah, we know, we had a batch of bad glue." Well why did you ship them then?????????? Then it took another year and half (after many more calls and threat of a lawsuit) to get the replacement set even though they were paid in full 2 years earlier.

Once the second set finally showed up they were fantastic. Closest thing to an NOS 67 door panel you will ever see. Worth the wait, maybe. Worth the heartache and frustration, hell no!

While my saga was going on they actually had hired a "customer service specialist" who was very nice and did everything he could to try to get them to perform. Even gave me his cell number. The last time I called him he said, "I quit yesterday because I got tired of wasting my time trying to get anything done and having everybody cuss me out every day."

It is definitely unfortunate.

Re: SMS Sale

With all this negative feedback in dealings with SMS, can any of y'all point me to a vendor who sells a CORRECT black vinyl top for a 67?

Re: SMS Sale

After a quick search, Legendary appears to sell a vinyl top with correct grain, backing material, and appearance. Just wondering if any of you guys have one from Legendary, and your opinion on originality. Pics of your ride appreciated.

10 years ago I bought a Parchment vinyl top for my '69 because they were the only vendor I could find that sold one in true Parchment color (a shade darker than white). It appears to be the correct grain, backing material, and appearance. I don't believe the seams between the rear window and trunk lid are quite correct in location but very few people know or care about the exact correct location and it wasn't that big a deal to me on this car. I know of some people that have had problems with SMS vinyl tops and SMS refused to do anything about it.
