Paint the door panels and kickpanels with regular enamel paint?,

Hello TC,

Can one paint a vinyl door panel or kick panel with regular interior paint?
In that, paint that isn't SEM or the like. Just the paint shop custom mixed base, spray bomb type.

I understand the whole cleaning, light scuffing and adhesion promoter regimen thing before. But if it can be used, will it need some kind of a topcoat to protect it?

The reason for the question is I have finally found a match to my interior colour, have the bombs, and cannot presently find any SEM colour anywhere near the right shade. And the panels are in great shape, just faded, and will never be found reproduced.

Thanks, Mark

Re: Paint the door panels and kickpanels with regular enamel paint?,

When I bought my Chevelle, it had a black interior which in fact was sprayed over a beige color. It didn't take long for it to start peeling, got scrathced so easily, etc… I got tired of that and bought new black door panels, kick pads, dash pad, and headliner & sunvisors. Seats were ok though...Problem solved.
painting over another color, especially on vinyl will sooner or later to look like crap and will likely have to be redone anyway.

Thanks Claude,

One advantage I'll have is I'll be spraying the same colour as the base vinyl. If it'll stick and not flake off it should be more forgiving.

Why use the wrong paint for the job?
Use SEM and do it right.

Do you have any auto body suppliers who sell SEM? I don't see a list of Canadian dealers for SEM, but some of them are able to mix OEM and custom colors.

There is one close that might mix. I'll call them. Thanks.

I have used spray bombs on plastic many times and never had an issue. But you need to first use a plastic primer first for proper adhesion.

Sem..anything else I used looked horrible. Wrong sheen, wrong texture it was obvious dont cheap out here.
SEM looks factory perfect
