Which tach?

Okay, I know that having the factory rollodex tach would be the ultimate look. But, I neither have the desire nor know how to remove the dash for just a tach. So, Im going with the tried and true hose clamp the tach to the column method. My question is, which one should I buy. I have it down to 3 choices. Augy recommended this one: https://www.mooneyesusa.com/MOONEYES.../mpg5000tm.htm

Ive also been looking into these 2 as well: https://www.jegs.com/i/Bosch-Actron/...T8050/10002/-1

https://www.jegs.com/i/Bosch-Actron/...T8000/10002/-1

Id like to keep with the late 60s/early 70s boy racer look. Im looking on opinions on which one will last the longest as ultimately I like the looks of all 3. As far as ease of installing, Ive installed a couple of tachs on previous rides, just wish Id have kept one of them.

Im not wanting a huge Autometer tach with a shift light, last shift rpm, etc. Just a nice little tach to go on the steering column and not obstruct the speedometer.

My father tells me I was born 30 years too late.

Re: Which tach?

That Moon tach is a real nice unit. I had one and it worked well. Another good one is the Autometer Chrome series. It looks the same as it did back in the sixties if you get the chrome cup. I like to mount them on the steering column. They look vintage that way..

I don't like these new gauges they have for these cars. I would rather keep the warning lights and have a set of gauges under the dash..

I am trying to put a set of vintage Sun gauges together now.. In my view there was never a better looking gauge then the vintage Sun green or blue series..

Re: Which tach?

Of the three choices given I like the Bosch tach. One of the reasons is the full sweep. Much better to quickly monitor ones rpm.
One tip I would give. I have an Autometer sport comp tachometer. It is a nice unit and is lit with an LED,bulb which is also quite nice but the bulb is red and is not changeable. I have all the instrument bulbs in my 69 switched to LEDs which is a great upgrade but wish the tach bulb was also white. If lit with an incandescent I recommend swapping it to an LED.

Re: Which tach?

I would go after one of these. Bosch bought Sunpro a while back. Click on the amazon link.

Re: Which tach?

I personally like the Sun Super Tach II. But with the black face. The white would be too bright at night.

I personally like the Bosch 8050, and I have it in my Wish list at Summit...

BTW, Summit offers that Bosch tach for less money than Jegs

Okay, so its only $1 cheaper at Summit...

Re: Which tach?

I bought the Moon half-sweep tach for its nostalgic look, and it was cheap. $70 brand new from a vendor at BTT50's. Plus I like anything with Moon eyes on it......

I actually like the looks of the full-sweep Bosch better since it looks exactly like the old Sun Super tachs. (Got a couple of those original ones too in my display case). The Bosch FST8000 seems to be a very good buy at $145. Can't comment on how well they work though, since I've never bought one.

When I works, I works hard.
When I sits, I sits loose.
When I thinks, I falls asleep.

Re: Which tach?

I like that one Kirk showed us. That's a decent price too and no box needed!

Re: Which tach?

Not sure what year your car is but the first Bosch tach you have listed with the half sweep, that is more of an early 60s to mid 60s style. The second Bosch choice is a late 60s design. Its just too bad that they dont say Sun on them anymore since Bosch bought them out!

This old SW with its red sending unit has been in the family since 1965. Moved to six or seven cars/trucks since then. Currently in my El Camino
