Best repro 4 speed center console for '69 Chevelle?

My Chevelle was born with a center console and the bracket is still under the carpet so I want to add one. Who makes the best repro?

I can't believe there are very many MANUFACTURERS for the console. Look for a console that is a GM Licensed product. A licensed product meets minimum standards set by GM for accuracy.

Perhaps more importantly, consider the VENDOR/RETAILER. Select a vendor who has a decent reputation and will stand behind the product. There are many vendors, however Summit Racing has ALWAYS come through for me.

I'm sure they all come from the same manufacturer in China/Taiwan. Find the cheapest vendor with best return policy. For me that's always been Summit Racing. They stock almost everything that OPGI and others do, just have to find it or call them.

Look on Craig’s list or eBay for a factory console, i found a factory one on eBay and as luck would have it, it was local to me. Very easy to refurbish.

I haven't seen anyone that rechromes plastic at a reasonable price.

How would an old console be easy to refurbish ?

There are still good condition consoles for sale out there. If you are not concerned about originality, buy the repop. All of the chrome pieces for the 68-72 consoles is available. Terry

I don’t know for sure if a 69 console has any chromed plastic. On my 70 4 speed console all the shiny parts are either stainless or die cast. I did have to fab up a new center rib in the lid, the die cast piece was too far gone.

I want to say I picked up the console for 40 bucks and probably have another 40-50 in it. Very satisfying re doing stuff like this.

I'm pretty sure that all consoles (manual & automatic) are the same, only the top plate is different.

John,First off I want to congratulate you on your find and your excellent restoration. Here's the thing although it's great that you got lucky and found that console that is usually not the case with most people looking for one out there. Most people search for a long time before finding a good console that's not overpriced.
The main reason is that console's are one of the most hoarded Chevelle parts out there.Easily removed and easy to store you see people bring them to swap meets and then take them back home with them.I check Craig list here all the time looking for stuff for my 71 without finding anything but when I DO find a console they are usually either over-priced or in really crummy shape.
To the OP Good Luck in your search,I hope you can eventually find or buy what you need.

Re: Best repro 4 speed center console for '69 Chevelle?

I assume the console is for your 69. The 69 console is a one year item. It is different from a 68 (another one year console) and the 70-72 consoles. Originals in good shape are available. The repos are not an accurate representation of the 69 console.
Most important thing about an original console is making sure the mounts are not broken. For a 4 speed that is the most forward mount and the storage compartment mounts. The two in the middle are for an automatic shifter so unless one is mounting an auto they are not a concern. However it is fairly easy to find the correct year and with all mounts being intact and for no more$$ than a repo.

Nope, subtle differences. 68 is unique, 69 is unique, and 70-72 are the same except the automatic shift plate color.

My outlook is somewhat different, it's not a wrong or right thing, just a different outlook. You take the price of a repop console, maybe $400, don't really know. Now you take an original that may have it's issues. That may be valued at somewhere between $200-$400 depending on the issues. Now you take a seller who devotes his time and efforts to make these look and function just as new, possibly spending a few hours and maybe $100-$200 on the parts. Now how much is that worth? Most enthusiasts just look at original parts as never worth more than a repop, but the reality is, they're just premium parts waiting for a special car. That special car's owner usually knows the difference and won't settle for repop crap. So that's why there's all sorts of levels of restorations. All that said, I'd say an original mint console could very well be worth upwards of $600.

Then, there are those sellers that see these high end restored consoles and see there's as the same, but in reality they haven't done anything to fix the issues, but for some reason want the same money.
