cutting carpet for auto floor shift with console

Is there a specific way to cut new carpet for the staple floor shifter with console? The carpet I took out was pretty hacked up. Any tips would be appreciated. TIA.

Use a box cutter/carpet knife and "sneek up" on the hole - start with a small hole. It is better to cut the hole very small and then enlarge it several times than it is to cut it too big and have to patch the carpet. Measure three times before the first cut. I've had the best results with the shifter not installed - mark the shifter location on the hump, then make your first cut, then see how the shifter fits. Remember that you'll want some carpet to curl up against the sides of the shifter and under the console.

Re: cutting carpet for auto floor shift with console

I ended up putting a T cut in the front half of the carpet about the width of the front two shifter mounting bolts and then down the center of the shifter towards the rear. Both sides tuck up along side of the shifter and are tight against the sides of the console and don't interfere with anything. I guess I was overthinking it. Thanks.

I did the T cut as well. Turned out nice.
