Yet another center console build

Been a while since I've been back to this forum. Thought I'd post up some details on some projects I've worked on with this car since I picked it up. One of them being the console build. This was my first endeavor with fiberglass. Man - that was a learning experience. Anyway - on to the pictures, they pretty much explain the journey.

The first picture is a rigged up foam cutter for making the core. The second picture is the core itself, pink foam basement insulation. Next is the templates out of cardboard. Then a rough cut and some test fitting in the car. More on the next post.

Next it was covered in blue tape to protect the foam. Covered in mold release wax, then began putting down layers of fiberglass. Learned such an extreme amount doing this but it was fun. After getting the core back out, a test fit and on to some bondo to smooth it out.

More mocking up as things went along. I left the gauge panel bare, but one day I may go back and cover it with something. Then it was time to have it covered. I hired an upholstery shop here in Omaha to do that part. No way was I attempting that. And after you have the final product. Pretty neat. My tech inspector riding shotgun says it passed!

Nice mock-up! Is it sturdy without a frame under the fiberglass?

Very nice. Iím still early in the thinkingaboutit phase for a console in my Ď68 and I was leaning toward making one from fiberglass. Yours gives me hope of it coming to fruition.

Nice. Mounted to the floor or just sitting on top?

I'm thinking I may try to make one for my 68 w bench seat.

Yep! I was a tad concerned about that in the beginning so I made the actual shell pretty thick. Used a nice tightly woven mat for a couple of the layers too. Came out very strong.

All you have to do is dive in head first. If you're like me once the project is going it'll be impossible to stop or give up. At one point I really felt like it was doomed but I had too much invested in material already to give up

Just sitting on top. It stays put really well.
