Here is one I built last year. It is removable and just sits in the storage bin of the console. If it is holding a beverage the lid to the storage bin has to be open but that is no big deal.

I was thinking about modifying the inside of the storage area. I have no problem cutting mine up. Nothing original on mine and if you close the door you won't see it.

Ebay - any stainless cup holder, they are popular for boats, RVs.
Stainless Cup Holders

I have also purchased them from a poker website, they are also used for drink holders on tables.
Here's where I used those (66 convertible armrests):

Brad, I think your thread and cup holder was what inspired me. I like your idea, but I have little kids, that console lid would be broken on the first trip. I like your design as well, definitely meets my 4 criteria.

Just found this while searching for ideas on cup holders. Have a '71 Chevelle with an auto console / 700R4 trans and factory "horse shoe" style shifter. This looks to be a very slick idea, liking it big time! Need to dig thru my plywood pieces and pick up some stainless cup holders.

I used this from a Silverado. Slips right in the console, but you need to remove cover with hinge to install

Cool, and using a Chevy part makes it all the better.
