Re: rare or not

Your post is one very long run-on sentence, could you please use punctuation when posting? Is makes things a lot easier to read.

Re: rare or not

Malibu Mike, was there a trailer package even available on a 70 2 door A body. I remember seeing a bunch of Sears installed air shicks and Class1 hitches, but nothing factory.

Couple of junkers and a few clunkers.

Chevrolet, in general, did not break down the options by bodystyle, therefore I don't think its really known if this is "rare" option for a 2-door, or even if its more "common" for a wagon.

The 12-bolt was a Heavy Duty item, and not a "Performance" option.

IMO, sounds like its just a run-of-the-mill Malibu ( 350-2barrel, sweep dash), despite the disc brakes and 12-bolt.

Do you have documantation showing the "trailering" option/12-bolt?

Re: rare or not

No sir I don't. Sorry about the punctuation I was using my phone to post the question originally. It does not have a trailer hitch just the 12 bolt rear and the disc brakes .the only reason I am referring to it as a trailer package option is because that's what I've been told is why it has the 12 bolt and disc brakes up front. According to the vin it may or may not have the RPO option which is from my understanding is the SS package (could be wrong) .Also to my understanding there was no SS's produced with the sweep dash but seems like it would be a perfect candidate to clone an SS with.My knowledge on chevelles is very limited but I am learning little by little thanks to this forum and the other members here . Thanks for your patience with the "New Guy"lol

Re: rare or not

There are no options coded in the VIN. You need some original paperwork to determine what are factory options. There was NOT a trailer option, tow hitchs were not factory options, aftermarket items/dealer accessories. If someone ordered the heavy duty radiator/cooling option V01, F40 Special Front and Rear suspension (F41=SS) or A/C with either of those then it probably defaulted to the HD rear axle. That was the way to build a car for towing or HD use (fleet).

As was mentioned, there is no "SS" option (RPO) coded in the VIN. for 1969-1972 Chevelles, the SS package was an option that could be had on a 2-door "Malibu", therefore the VIN is the same as the Malibu (1969 is an exception as non-Malibus could also be SS cars). For 1972, the engine was denoted in the VIN, but the SS was available with a 350 a 402 (396) and the 454... The 350 and 402 were both available in the Malibu, but the 454 was only available with the SS...

Correct, no SS cars produced with the sweep dash, but the round pod dash (often called an SS dash) was also available in a plain Malibu (extra cost option) with guages. MANY Malibus had disc brakes, so the only "clone" part would be the 12-bolt, and many people don't see that, or don't know...

In earlier years, the 12-bolt was an option listing for trailering (usually in a non-performance gear ratio)...

Still a 12-bolt and discs are a nice start to a performance setup...

Once you go RAT, you never go back...

Re: rare or not

I know on the fullsize cars in 70, there was an option for trailering ratio. Not sure if Chevelles had it.

http://www.chevellestuff.net/1972/options_by_model.htm

Dale's site lists RPO YD1, axle for trailering. It was available with all V8's (even the 307), and lists ONLY the 3.31 ratio 12-bolt (8.875" ring gear).

Elsewhere, the info alluded to
"with special suspension"

For what its worth, there were 2,821 Chevelles with this option in 1972... no breakdown of bodystyle. That does make it "rare", but doesn't necessarily mean it is "desirable", especially without documentation (beyond the value of now having a 12-bolt)... Positraction was optional...

Re: rare or not

How would I get paperwork on the car? I have looked for the build sheet with no luck .As far as my plans for this car I'm putting in a 400 sbc with 97 vortec heads along with an elderbrock rpm air gap intake with a small cam and using a 350 turbo tranny .Should be a stout street car.

Re: rare or not

Not super common, but definitely a plus. A YD1 Trailering Rear Axle, 3.31 12-bolt is desirable and is a good ratio for where it sounds like you are going with your new Chevelle. Build that TH350 well so it can live behind aggressive use from your 400. It sounds like a great package. Congrats!

I remember finding a 70 Monte Carlo in a SoCal pick a part back in the late 80ís, it was a 350 2-barrel but had a 12 bolt posi with 2.73 or 3.07 gears. Looked like it was an all original grandma car.

About a dozen years ago I bought a 68 El Camino that originally had a 307, 4spd, factory tach and gauges along with a 12 bolt posi. I have no way of knowing if the rear end was original to that car, but it was from a car that had air shocks.
