Re: OK guys, EXPLAIN to me why Disco died???

I loved Disco - and never stopped. I'll argue that it never really died - but that it fell off the top tier.
(It's still with us in subtle forms as well as the standard classics).
I think it never should have been pushed as the main content of radio in competition against rock. That incurred a major backlash. Disco is dance music and belongs in dance venues.
Along with its slip from its heights, there was the erasure of clubs, fashions, communities; really a realignment of popular culture.
The outbreak of AIDS in 1981 sealed the deal when one of Disco's major fan bases was decimated.

I look at Disco's 3-year reign and compare that to Rap/Hip-hop's 30 year occupation and I'm at a complete loss about what happened to the world.

Anyone who comes to a Chevelle site and digs up an old thread unrelated to the purpose of the site will surely be a frequent player here with lots of positive input.

I take that back, there were a couple decent tunes that came out in the 70s..

Survived in what most people think as you say is "popular". Pop is broadcast by corporate radio, which is what many narrow minded people listen to who have a limited understanding of music.

There are are a vast number of talented musicians who never get corporate airplay, but are appreciated by those who do not have cookie cutter mentalities.

Re: OK guys, EXPLAIN to me why Disco died???

I guess the fact that someone dug up a 2 year old thread shows that Disco is at least chronic.

My Sirius Radio is stuck on 50's on 5.

Re: OK guys, EXPLAIN to me why Disco died???

Wow... Old thread. I was never a huge fan of disco, but there was some ok songs. I will say it was much better than the total crap that passes for pop music in 2016. Seems like music has been going down hill since 2000.

I like lots of different types of music - 50s Rock and roll, 60s British Invasion and garage rock, Motown, classic rock, punk, thrash, hair metal, funk, some rap, etc. However, I just can't warm up to most of what is on the radio today.

Wait ten years, then todays crap will be hip, although I hope not.
