I'd first test the gage before I'd drop the tank. If you disconnect the sender wire, at the tank, ground it, the gage should read empty. If you open the gage wire, the gage should read full+. Check the gage out first. Could be a bad gage connection or a bad calibration resistor. Easy fixes.
Say john, pardon me if i'm wrong but don't you have to drop the tank to disconnect the sending unit?
