383 Crank?

I have a crankshaft that I'm trying to decode.
I see what seems to be a stamp number of 383 on one of the journals.
Also the crank journal measures 2.100
Any advise as to what where to find other markings or id?
Thanks guys

Re: 383 Crank?

Pictures would help. If its an aftermarket crankshaft it might be hard to go by the numbers. Your machine shop should be able to measure the stroke for you and tell you what it is. If you stand the crank straight up and look down at the front counterweight are there any numbers there ? That is where most of the better aftermarket cranks have the part numbers.

Re: 383 Crank?

the rod journal is 2.100? that would be a 350 type crank. 327 and other small journal cranks have 2.00 rod journals.

Is that number stamped or cast/forged in?

Actually, there was a large journal 327 crank in 69

Re: 383 Crank?

You are probably right, I just know there were both large and small journal 327 cranks out there

Re: 383 Crank?

here is a good site for casting # lookups that I found. Small Block Crank Casting Numbers I cannot see the casting number on the photo but you might see if it matches any of these.

Re: 383 Crank?

Dan,
It has a dowel pin in the rear flange which usually means it is external balance so your thinking it is a 383 cranks makes sense. I dont think it is a stock crankshaft, probably one of the inexpensive cast cranks from Scat, Eagle etc. Its hard to make out the casting number in your picture but I dont think it will show up anywhere either way. Are the mains 350 size ?

Re: 383 Crank?

the casting number is 020513
I don't see it listed anywhere, so I guess it remains a puzzle

Re: 383 Crank?

It "looks" like one of the cheap aftermarket cranks. Should be fine for a street engine.

That is 350 main and rod size but the only unknown is the stroke. There is a fairly good chance it is a 383 but only way to know for sure is to measure it.
