Re: 454 spare engine

Checked and set the oilpump endplay today, sanded the housing on a piece of glas untill I got .002. Deburred the gears, cleaned and put on a light coat of oil. Assembled the pump and put in the blue spring.

Carb is cleaned and in parts looked real nice and seems to be from 2001, going to order a rebuild kit and secondary metering block.

Re: 454 spare engine

Blueprinting the oil pump ! And I have Crower SS rollers on the 427, although its overkill. ( 20K miles on the cheaper Crane aluminums wore them out so....I wanted rebuildable ones)

Very cool project!

Thanks! Hopes the machine shop calls me and tells me to come and pickup the rotating assembly in a couple of weeks.

Crower SS are very nice rockers have a set on my 489, feel these comps are little less in quality/finish vs the crowers but since I got the comps for decent $ I will give them a try on this very mild build.

Re: 454 spare engine

Had to work today but when I came home I went out and installed the oil pump pickup since it was raining. Checked with clay and ended up sitting little at an angle .406-.488 guess that will be ok. Going to brace it to the pump but was out of rods. Hope the machine shop will give me a call soon and tell me rotating assembly is balanced so I can finish the shortblock.

Re: 454 spare engine

Got some more small parts today.
Also gave the pan a shot with the rattle can, there was some flaws that I decided I wanted to fix.

A bolt kit, a carburetor rebuild kit, a moroso dipstick threaded the pan so I can use the npt fitting and a thermostat housing+one spare.

Still heard nothing from my machine shop about the rotating assembly he said at best end of this month or middle of next.

Re: 454 spare engine

Major setback! Machine shop called.
My crank needed mallory to be balanced with my heavy parts I knew that but way more than I figured

After some thinking I decided it felt better and was more cost effective to get a new cast crank from the machine shop than put in several slugs of mallory. New cast crank only needed one slug of mallory to be balanced with my rods/postons.

He is working on it now so probably ready next week but with twice the price I hoped for.

So budget in this build is long gone. But it will be a very nice spare engine when done.

Nice project - almost budget build!
Does getting a new crank mean you will have to exchange your rod and main bearings? I thought you started with .010" under on both?

Re: 454 spare engine

Started little yesterday. Had my wife with me since she thinks engines are fun and wanted to learn some again she havent wrenched with one since she was in school, she rebuilt a 400 sb as a project.

Rechecked main bearing clearance with plastigage 1 and 3 was .003”and 2 and 4 was .0025” 5 was .0035” so checked out ok.

Endplay was .006” checked both with feeler gauge and dial indicator.

Checked 1 and 2 rod bearing clearance 1 was .0025” and 2 was .003”.

1 to 2 side clearance was .020”.

Then we had to call it a day. Going to check rest of the rod bearing clearance on friday (if needed wick is most likely we have some more time on next Sunday), check ring gaps and hopefully start to finish the shortblock, put in the cam and degree it.

Bag shortblock up put it in a corner and collect some more parts and save up the money to have the heads rebuilt. Probably going to change the intake, think a friend will buy the zz502 intake and I will go with a RPM air gap instead .

Re: 454 spare engine

that .002 rod side clearance, it that typo for .020?? .002 is no good and I see the feeler gauge looks thicker.

Exactly what I saw. Mine are loose at .024. Marcus must mean 20 thou.

We're visiting Europe in a month, a Swedish speed shop ought have been on our agenda.
