Who has the best crate 496 engine ?

Need some help guys. I was in the beginning stages of building a 468 or 496 for my Chevelle. I have my 454 block (standard bore) and some 73' 049 heads I just had worked ( 2.19/1.88 manley valves, 5 angle valve job, bowl work ) . I've got $300 in the block and cast crank. I've got $ 850.00 in the heads. Well, I recently went to work part-time for a auto parts store. I was told by my manager I could get ANYTHING I wanted from Summit for about 40% off retail. The same would also apply to Jegs and Competition Products. My goal is 575-600 h.p on pump gas. Well, I did an estimate on me building the 496, machine work, assembly, dialing in, dyno run etc, basically a "turn-key"( no headers, wires etc) motor and even with using Scat and/or Eagle stuff, I end up at about $8,000 - $8,500. Reality and past projects usually end up $1,000 higher than expected. Here's the break down: Competition products / 540-street/strip turn-key $10,795...40% off = $6,477. Speedway motors: 496 / turn-key $ 6,999.00...40% off= $4200, Jegs 496 /turn-key $8,095...40% off = $4857, Summit 496, 496/turn-key $8,096...40% off= $4858.00. All these motors make about the same hp(575-625) and torque.
Has anyone had good or bad luck with these crate motors? Does anybody have a crate motor that they "LOVE" and wouldn't change a thing? THANKS!!

Vortecpro, and Mike Lewis ( Wolfplace ) can build you a killer motor.

Re: Who has the best crate 496 engine ?

Be interesting to see if that 40% off applies to complete engines, somehow I suspect it doesn't. Don't think they have the same mark up as common less expensive parts. But I hope I'm wrong, and you can get a killer deal.
Good luck, Jim.

IMHO, it's hard to beat a Mark Jones 468 or 496. He's nothing short of amazing.

Mike Lewis/Wolfplace is also very highly regarded.

Good luck!

Re: Who has the best crate 496 engine ?

doubt if he's really going to get 40 off from Summit unless it's 40 off from some imaginary list price nobody ever pays anyway.

Especially on a complete engine.

Thumbs up Re: Who has the best crate 496 engine ?

Another vote for Mark Jones (VortecPro). He knows how to get the job done and do it right! I love mine.

I can guarantee you its not 40% or anything close to that. Engine shops would be out of business Summit sells our line of engines including a 489/496ci. Quite a few guys on this and other forums run our engines

Re: Who has the best crate 496 engine ?

OP here. Thanks to all. Well, I talked with Mark Jones yesterday. He is a very nice guy, in fact, he called me back and ask me some various questions. He said " tell me how fast you want to go". I have an all metal, original 67', no mini-tub, no race goodies etc. I told him I wanted to run 6.80's in the eigth. He said I would need 550 to 575 hp,4:11 gears (BTW, I'm running a super t-10 4 speed) and the right tires to hit 6.80's. I ask about hitting 6.50's. He said I would need 600 hp and be able to hook really good and shift perfect. I like his 468 motor with 620hp for $5895.00. If I was rich (and I'm not), I would buy his 496 with 650 hp for $7,795. For me, the extra $2,000 for only about 60 ft/lb of torque doesn't make sense from any standpoint. Hell, all I'm going to do is spin the damn tires anyway. Mark said that he plans to run a 468 with peanut port heads and post his times. He says the numbers will be very impressive. Like you guys know, he is the wizard when it comes to making power with 049 and 781 heads; however, he puts in a full days work of "bowl and runner" labor. I ask my local engine builder about " extreme bowl and runner labor". He said it would cost me $1500.00 on labor. I said, well forget that...I can buy a set of new heads for that because I already have $850 in my 049's. BTW, the 40% off thing turned out to be bull****. My boss was just talking trash. The truth is, I only get 20% off. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!!!!
