Who has the best crate 496 engine ?
Need some help guys. I was in the beginning stages of building a 468 or 496 for my Chevelle. I have my 454 block (standard bore) and some 73' 049 heads I just had worked ( 2.19/1.88 manley valves, 5 angle valve job, bowl work ) . I've got $300 in the block and cast crank. I've got $ 850.00 in the heads. Well, I recently went to work part-time for a auto parts store. I was told by my manager I could get ANYTHING I wanted from Summit for about 40% off retail. The same would also apply to Jegs and Competition Products. My goal is 575-600 h.p on pump gas. Well, I did an estimate on me building the 496, machine work, assembly, dialing in, dyno run etc, basically a "turn-key"( no headers, wires etc) motor and even with using Scat and/or Eagle stuff, I end up at about $8,000 - $8,500. Reality and past projects usually end up $1,000 higher than expected. Here's the break down: Competition products / 540-street/strip turn-key $10,795...40% off = $6,477. Speedway motors: 496 / turn-key $ 6,999.00...40% off= $4200, Jegs 496 /turn-key $8,095...40% off = $4857, Summit 496, 496/turn-key $8,096...40% off= $4858.00. All these motors make about the same hp(575-625) and torque.
Has anyone had good or bad luck with these crate motors? Does anybody have a crate motor that they "LOVE" and wouldn't change a thing? THANKS!!
