65 Malibu w/396. Can't find headers/ex. manifold that fit

Hey all. I posted a while back about this and never was able to get a resolution.

I just put a 396 in my 65. I purchased headers that said they were for a 65 BBC well they didn't fit, not even close. Not only did they hit the steering shaft, they would've required a remote oil filter set up.

I know that the manifolds, which I got from Craigslist because I needed something, are not for a Chevelle but the truth is that it doesn't look like ANY exhaust manifolds or headers for that matter, will fit. It's VERY tight

The manifolds that are on now rub against the steering shaft and its just really irritating.

I have no idea what to do here. I'm stumped. I'm worried if I spring for manifolds/headers that are "supposed" to fit I'll be throwing money away.

But I know BBs have been dropped into 65 by many people, so what am I missing here? Can anyone help?

Re: 65 Malibu w/396. Can't find headers/ex. manifold that fit

What Headers did you buy ?

Back in the 80s I had a 65 GTO which is the same A body as the 65 Chevelle
had a pair of Hooker headers put on the 70 Pontiac 400 BB engine
fit fine except for denting one header tube that did rub on the steering shaft
& no problem with the oil filter

Now if you loosen up the bolts on the steering shaft and push it towards the fender you might not need to dent the header tube .

Also there are more expensive headers out there that supposablely fit without denting them etc.

Not a very popular engine option in '65... (thus no Headers...)

Re: 65 Malibu w/396. Can't find headers/ex. manifold that fit

Honestly, the headers I bought were just cheapo eBay headers that I had purchased when I first started buying the parts for the swap so I didn't know they didn't fit until it was time to put the engine in. If there are headers or a manifold out there that are certain to fit I'll buy them. I just want this to be right. The problem is I'm not confident about what will be right based on what I've read.

As far as the BB not being a popular option, from what I understand it actually wasn't an option at all and the 396 wasn't put in the Chevelle until 1966.

doesn't matter, all the 396/427/454 had the same exhaust port and bolt pattern. same with the frame, no notable differences in the front between those years. Nothing that would affect header fitment anyway.

Re: 65 Malibu w/396. Can't find headers/ex. manifold that fit

I imagine headers, especially between styles made by the same manufacturer, can vary somewhat.
Summit branded headers have fit all my needs, and installed without too many headaches.
Ive also used hooker in the past...dont have any experience with any other brands...

Motor mounts are brand new purchased from Ground Up. As you can see in the pics the steering shaft is literally rubbing against the manifold. Obviously some folks have had luck dong exactly what I did, I just need to find one or two of them and do exactly what they did.

Its hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the engine is either to low or maybe not centered, are the motor mounts big block mounts?

Re: 65 Malibu w/396. Can't find headers/ex. manifold that fit

I have a 64 with a BB I have repro BB frame stands(was l6 car from begining). I have tried 3 different sets of headers Hooker 2455HKR they fitted pretty good only some small dings but hangel low, next set was Hedman 65002 they needed som dings to fit hangel Little higher than the Hookers and the ball and socket collector was nice last set that Im currently using is Dougs D322 pretty expensive but the fitted as good as you can expect from over self headers needed som minor grinding to fit no dings and the sit higher than the Hookers.
All the 3 sets above have 2" primarys wich is to big for your Engine its better with 1 3/4" on a 396.
I would look at Hedman 68198 many members here has had sucess with them or Dougs D313 if they are Close to the D322 they will fit great but they are a bit pricey. On some sb cars I have installed Summit brand headers and the fit was very good so they might be an option too SUM-G9010.
Over self headers can be a pain some fit great but some are a real pain in the ass to install.

Re: 65 Malibu w/396. Can't find headers/ex. manifold that fit

I have a set of Hedman, older, that fit like a glove and no interferences. They are 1 3/4" ID w/3" collectors. 64 thru 67 all take the same design - 68 up is different, due to changes in the frame and crossmember.

OLDED - It's STOCK if it's made by GM and it fits!

The motor mounts should be correct. Here's the kit I bought from Ground Up http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.mv...ode=AMC-103KIT

Has anyone else used this kit?

Honestly, it would be hard to believe that the engine is sitting too low. The air cleaner is very close to the hood when it's shut. And I actually had a different carb on before which I had to use a small spacer and I broke one of the studs off of the hood molding because it fit so close to the hood.

Being off center is a possibility, although I'm not sure how much more centered we can get it. The mounts aren't really adjustable, ya know? I'm really at a loss here.

Re: 65 Malibu w/396. Can't find headers/ex. manifold that fit

I've had both exhaust manifolds and Hedman elite headers on my 65 with a 454 in it. I did have to trim the lower control arms for clearance with the headers, but the manifolds fit fine. I have also run a 4" air filter element with the stock drop base air cleaner and a C-396 intake. Maybe make a 1/4" plate for under the left motor mount?
