Best SBC Valve Cover Gaskets

I've always used cork but get leaks at the rear lower corner. These are the 60's/70's style heads. Are the rubber gaskets better or should I stick with cork?

Re: Best SBC Valve Cover Gaskets

I've tried both. Call me old fashioned, but I'd settled on cork for the chrome factory-style Valve Covers (on cast heads). I just glue them to the Valve Covers and bolt the covers on. They've been on and off several times and I haven't had a problem.

I'm trying rubber gaskets on the cast Valve Covers (on aluminum heads) the 'Bu currently has and I see some seepage. In the spring I'll be putting cork gaskets in.

I have the vortec style heads with the raised rail and center bolts. I use the rubber gaskets glued to the valve cover which are cast aluminum, and have no leaks at all.

With that price I'll stay with cork.

I went back to cork on both the Chevelle and the Mustangs. Just Hi tack them onto the covers and they seem to work fine.

They came with a set of valve covers, or I may not have paid that for them either. But the covers have been off a couple times & no leaks.

Re: Best SBC Valve Cover Gaskets

I just replaced my chronic leakers with the Fel-Pro VS 12869 T. I got them at Advance Auto.

Just torque them down as per the instructions, and watch out for the tiny (yes tiny) tab with the note the side to install nearest the push rods. No leaks for me now.

I have had pretty good luck with the Jeg's rubber with a steel center. Seal great.

Re: Best SBC Valve Cover Gaskets

Felpro and many other manufacturers make a cork or rubber with a steel insert. With my Z28 I didn't want to take off my factory finned valve covers when i went to roller rockers and used two stacked with slightly longer bolts and they gave me the clearance that I needed without any leaks for years. They stay put.

Re: Best SBC Valve Cover Gaskets

I usually do the cork; small amount of RTV on valve cover side, and plenty of wheel bearing grease on head side. After heating up and running, the grease makes the cork VERY pliable/soft and allows it to form to the head. When you go to remove them, they pop right off, instead of sticking, tearing, and making mess.

I'd like to say it was my idea, but someone much smarter told me; works great.
