496 help

Hi everybody, building my first 496 and could use some input. Mostly street with some track.
Car is a 66 ss chevelle. Has a legend/Keisler 5 speed manual
S60 rear with 4.11 ratio
Weighs 3650 with sbc and 200Lbs driver
Block and machine work done
80s 454 block
Scat rotating assembly
Edelbrock rpm intake
Edelbrock 6045 oval ports
10.6 comp
Cam?
I initially liked the comp
11-450-8
230/230 578/578
Comp tech suggested
11-451-8
230/236 547/547
Any decent roller rockers that will fit under original valve covers?
Heads and intake have been gasket matched
Should I have them flowed? Do these heads respond well to porting? Or is it a waste of money on these heads?

I will need a carb or possibly fuel injection?

Recommend any books and videos on bbc assembly/building/tuning

Thanks in advance, not looking to build a race car or a tow truck. Hot street with some daily when I can.

Maybe cheater covers? If double gasket wont do the trick?

The first cam sounds ok to me. You may want to contact some more cam companys and see what they suggest.
I like steel roller rockers Crower or Comp. Crane or harland sharp if alu.

Thanks, would steel rockers be more durable than aluminum? Better valve cover clearance? I was originally building
A 454. Does anyone have experience with these heads on a 496? Worried it will be super choked.

Re: 496 help

Scorpion Rockers has a model line that says claims smaller body and shorter polylock for increased clearance. You would think a steel rocker would require less metal for the same strength but I don't know if they are actually manufactured like that. I believe you can buy the Comp Cams and the Scorpion rockers in a single piece from the big mail order sites to test with.

Steel will have a longer life.
The heads will work fine for what you want.

Re: 496 help

yes, the heads are good. I'd talk to one of cam grinder who post here before buying anything in a CC retail box.

Chris Straub of straubtec

and mike jones at Jones cam designs come to mind.

Re: 496 help

Those are good heads that will serve you well. I wouldn't pay out porting money unless you build a much larger engine or go racing at high RPM.
