Best oil for 1965 Chevelle Malibu L79 327 engine

What is the best oil option for a 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS 327 L79 engine? Previous owner left quarts of Vavoline VR1 30W in the trunk.

Nothing wrong with the VR1 30w for street use, it has everything you need in it for a flat tappet cam. I prefer the 10w30 version.

Your just jealous because you can't hear the voices!

The 10W30 version is what I use as well. I can get it locally but amazon had a killer deal on it about 6 months ago. Someone here put me onto it.

Google "Classic car oil", and scroll down to the 4th or 5th website, and there is a link to the Classic Car Club Of America. They go in depth why todays motor oil is not recommended for classic cars. An interesting read, but it would take a chemist to understand all the lingo. I does sound plausible though. I have used it in all of the classic cars that I have owned with no problems.

Easy to understand, modern synthetics are not for earlier metalugy engines, they are designed for engine parts that roll, not slide, and hardened bearing surfaces. Our older engines are basically made from metals derived from Silly Putty.

I use dino oils, 20W-50, straight 30.

I don't know about best but I use Mobil 1 5-30 from Sams club.. I have used this oil for decades in all kinds of engines.. Many flat tappets.. I tried Brad Penn once but it kept foaming and I would get lifter tick after climbing long hills.. I also use Rislone from Shaler.. I add a qt a few hundred miles before oil change time.. I change oil twice a year... I try to park it for the winter with fresh oil...

Most oils that have the zddp are a complete package and don't require additives. DO a search on 540Rat and his oil testing and you can decide for yourself. It's a long read but very good. Wonder where 540 Rat went? Yeah I know, got to much grief about his testing methods and bowed out. Honestly, I don't blame him. I learned a ton. VR1 Valvoline 10-30 racing oil (silver bottle).
1500 ppms on the zddp. Good stuff and not really racing oil (black bottle is).

Another good source of information is 'Bobistheoilguy.com'. But be prepared for information overload, unless you're a chemist.
Personally, I use 5w-30 Valvoline dino oil in my Camaro and dually. I use 5w-30 Mobile 1 synthetic in my newer vehicles.

Suggest Autozone 10W30 with some Comp Cams break in additive.

I use Chevron Delo 400 SDE 15W-40. It has 1200ppm of ZDDP. I add a bottle of Lucas ZDDP additive. BTW, Autozone currently has a 2 1/2 gallon jug of Delo on sale for $35.00.

Owning a Chevelle project is like having a giant-size piggy bank that you keep pouring money into....but you can't get it back out.
