If there are no numbers there, look for them on a pad right above the timing chain cover.

LS6 came with big rectangle port heads and a high-rise aluminum intake with a "snowflake" symbol cast into a front runner.

I did find these numbers behind the alternator: TI020CGV (second letter looks to be an i). Thanks for the help in finding that!

I believe the CGV code is the 1970 LS4 454, 345 HP and was available in a Caprice,Impala, etc.

Correct for 454's but 396(402) were installed throughout the late 60's and early 70's.

Re: 427 or 454???

The 1971 454 is either a LS5, 365 hp, or LS6, 425 hp...

Engine Suffix Code CPA LS5 4-speed
CPO LS5 Turbo 400

No such thing as a 71 LS6 in a production car.

Not a numbers matching Chevelle, but at least originally it was an LS5 according to the build sheet. At least I now know it has a 454 and somewhat similar to the LS5. Thanks for all the replies everyone, I'm sure I will have more questions in the future!

Low rise for a production Chevelle, high rise for "crate" engines.
