72 Chevelle engine build planning.

Current plans are to build as if I was 17yo kid and a wprking at Micky Ds budget with a bone stock 350. So here is the plan:
Stock spec 4 bolt block and heads.
600-650 cm carb.
Performance intake.
Cam and lifter set.
Gear drive timing.
Headers and exhaust.

So here is what my inner 17yo is looking at:
Edelbrock Perormer 650 carb
Edelbrock performer intake
Edelbrock cam and flat tapper hydraulic lifters.
Edelbrock gear drive timing set.
Flowmasters 2.50 stainless header back exhaust with 40 or 50 series mufflers.
Headers I have no clue on yet, except I'd like ceramic coated.

That said, I have no intention of opening the block to change the crank or changing the cyl heads. Remember, this is all shade-tree mechanic stuff.

Is anybody out there done somilar.
Comments?
Recommendations?
Thx for any feedback,
Russ.

Re: 72 Chevelle engine build planning.

Additional info: Will be mated to auto trans. Probably a TH350, but considering the 700r4.
Was told the differential has 3.73 bearing, positive unknown.

JMHO, you'll hate the gear drive after one day of driving, use a double roller chain kit and good luck!!

progress has little to do with speed, but lots to do with direction

Really? I had heard that gear drives are noisy, that obtrusive?

I"m an old Harley guy myself. All my motors had gear driven cams. Have not done any real work on a four wheeler since I had a 72 Roadrunner in the 80s. So little experience in that area. I tell the guys at the local hardware store that I an a city boy learning how to live country, and most lessons are being the hard way. Here, I'm a gearhead biker trying to learn cars. Hopefully, this forum and members like yourself, I won't make tomany mistakes. Knowing how deep I got sucked into my bikes, I'll probably eventually end up with a a monster BBC and a blower punched through the hood. lol.
