Re: Engine ??? What is it?

It's hard to say by just looking at it. The only thing which is easy to tell is that it's a small block.

Re: Engine ??? What is it?

I think we are going to need a little more information there. A picture of a small block Chev doesn't give anyone much to go on.

Re: Engine ??? What is it?

It's a Chevy small block.

See if you can find any numbers on the front pad behind the alternator.

If none, casting numbers and date from the back side of the engine on top of the bellhousing mounting flange.

If stock heads, get a picture of the front of the head. By the marks we can usually tell what head is on the engine. Front face of the head is what we need. You can go a step further by pulling a valve cover and providing the casting date and casting number.

Re: Engine ??? What is it?

Zak,
No matter what numbers you find on the block that will only tell you what the engine started life as. It is obvious that the engine in the picture has been modified and is more than likely not stock.

No matter what anyone tell you there are only two ways to find out what it is.

1. Find the guy that built the engine as it is now and ask him for the details or
2. Take it apart and find out exactly what is in it.

Anything else is just a wild assed guess, period.

Re: Engine ??? What is it?

GM crate engines come painted black. I'm guessing from all the store bought fancy stuff on the front that it's out of their catalog. Perimeter bolt valve covers on aluminum heads, maybe a fastburn like a zz430. All just wild guesses though, I really have no idea.

Re: Engine ??? What is it?

Looks like someone spent some money on a front drive serpentine belt setup for a small block Chevy, make sure if they're asking serious money to ask for receipts so you can be sure what you're buying. Also receipts help with warranty if any are ever needed,it's better to have stuff like that beforehand.

Re: Engine ??? What is it?

Thanks again, to all that posted,

The deal went south, I was given one price and then another, either way I would have preferred a BB.

You assume that it is less than what it looks to be until proven otherwise. That could be a worn out 283 that has been painted nicely and dressed up.
