Small Block Vortec Heads questions

As far as the Vortec head goes, is there a better head casting to use and what is a good source to get a pair of them. I have never used a set of Vortec heads in my life personally. I built a few boat engines at the machine shop that used them as original equipment, this shows how long ago. I am building a relatively stock 355 for my 80 Malibu and I think it would be worth going the Vortec head path for a power gain. Thanks.

Re: Small Block Vortec Heads questions

I would either buy new GM castings if they are still available or one of the aftermarket versions. About 40% of the used ones I see have cracks in them somewhere or another. The aftermarket versions have a lot thicker deck and are available with both intake bolt patterns too.

I was thinking that too. I see Summit has a set of vortec reproductions. For what I want to do, I don't think I could cover the machine shop costs for the cost of the new heads.

I have used the EngineQuest Vortec CH350C - it is a stock replacement for the Vortec head with thicker decks and better water jackets.

Both the 906 and 062 heads flow close to the same, but there are some differences. The exhaust seats are different between the 2 castings and I have a set of 062's that have a thicker deck. Don't but the new Mexico Vortec's they are not as nice as the factory ones. There are a lot of them left to buy used. Last set cost me $50.

Re: Small Block Vortec Heads questions

Can I ask the dumb question of what they came on to find good ones?

I really would not waste any money on used ones. If you insist they came on 96 - 2002 trucks and old body style Tahoe's and Suburbans. 5.7 Vin R My 99 2dr Tahoe has that engine in it.

Here is David Vizzards Vortec head video. My friend Matt said David is one smart cookie.

Better than buying junkyard castings and finding you need guides, valves, or have a cracked head. Swap springs on these and you are good to go.

IMO, GM quality is likely to be better than a lot of the aftermarket stuff. I am using a set of these (though they were only ~$600 / pair when I purchased) with beehive springs and Comp 787-16 retainers. Mine went 227 cfm @ 0.450" lift on a calibrated flowbench with no porting.

Mine are Mexican castings, but OLDER Mexican castings. I've heard rumors that new ones have smaller ports and don't flow as well. Not sure whether this is true or not?
