I would have left the rubber line there or just put on a new one. Too many transitions restrict flow too. You need the rubber to allow movement. What size metal line did you use ?

3/8" steel line with the same curve the rubber hose had. When the tubing is pushed into the rubber hose, it expands the hose about the thickness of the steel wall, so I think it's the same inside diameter throughout. There's rubber hose at both ends for flex. BTW, the rubber fuel hose I replaced was brand new.
