505 Build - Yes, another one!!

Been debating about a thread for my BBC build because it is a pretty well worked over subject. Finally decided to share a bit as it is interesting to see what others do/try.

This all started as a 496 but do to block issues I ended up at 505. I am using a 445 block with 4 bolt mains. Previous owner had the block sonic tested when he went .060 over, measurements showed plenty of meat to go .100. I elected to do a partial fill even though numbers were favorable to run without. By partial fill I mean Hard Block to 1/4 below the rear frost plugs on the side of the block.

Machine shop checked cam bearing bore and installed cam bearings. Also bored block - final hone with torque plates. Align honed main bores. Block decked. Balanced crankshaft.

Rotating assembly consists of Eagle forged crankshaft fully counter-balanced. Scat H beam rods. King race bearings. Wiseco forged pistons with 20cc dome.

Rounding out the short block with a standard volume Melling oil pump with a 70 psi spring. Jegs oil pan with scraper, windage screen and trap doors.

Clearances are:
Main bearings .0027 - Rear .003
End play .006
Rods .0025 - Side .015
Piston to bore .005

All components of rotating assembly cleared block with no modifications

Re: 505 Build - Yes, another one!!

is this a race only deal because filling the block will raise oil temp ,sometimes enough to wipe out cam bearings on the street without a cooler. i built one allmost 15 years ago for a guy that was a street car but ive seen more with high oil temp problems. if you have enough meat i wouldnt fill it for a street deal

Street/strip.

I did quite a bit of research on block filling and oil temps. My conclusion was that there COULD be issues with oil temp, not that there WOULD necessarily be issues. I will run an oil temp gauge to verify. And then a cooler if needed.

Re: 505 Build - Yes, another one!!

the engine i built 15 years ago i spoke of is a stteet strip deal and its been completely trouble free but i dont have any oil temp data on it.the water temp is never over 180 so you know the oil temps are higher though. monitor it like you plan to and you should be ok. i have a filled 505 in my racecar

Re: 505 Build - Yes, another one!!

Top end for this build consists of ProMaxx heads (https://promaxxperformance.com/product/maxx-317-bbc/) flat milled to 116 cc chambers. Felpro 1017 head gaskets, ARP bolts, Howards Cams roller rockers and Smith Bros. 7/16 pushrods.

Camshaft is a Howards Cams 120665-12 hydraulic roller 243/249 @ .050 .640 lift with Howards Cams 91161 lifters.

Intake is an Edlbrock Victor Jr. 454R that was port matched to the heads.

Dyno testing will be done with a Fitech Meanstreet and a 1050 carb.

What does "filling the block" mean? Filling it with what?

Re: 505 Build - Yes, another one!!

Filling refers to putting SOMETHING into the water jackets to help stiffen the cylinder bores. Large overbores can weaken the cylinder walls due the walls getting thin. By adding filler the walls are supported to help them stay round and prevent cracking. I used a product called Hard Blok. For lack of a better term it is a grout type mixture that is designed to mimic expansion rates of the cast iron block thereby supporting the cylinders without separating from them.

Re: 505 Build - Yes, another one!!

Finished assembling today. Headed for the test stand tomorrow. Should have it fired up by mid afternoon. A little run in time and then a recheck of valve train, an oil change and ready to make a dyno appointment.

Re: 505 Build - Yes, another one!!

Engine has been running on test stand for a bit. Probably 8 cycles of start up, warm up, look over and cool down. Rechecked valve lash and rocker tip pattern on valves. Getting ready for a trip to the dyno.

Looking to dial it in with my Fitech Meanstreet EFI. My Doug's headers. 12" collector extensions.

Then attach some Jegs mufflers that came with my 3" kit. Sort of a Flowmaster 40 series knock-off.

Next switch to some 17665 Dynomax Super Turbos

Finally go to the shops 950 HP carb and 12" collector extensions to compare numbers to the Fitech unit.

Should be interesting ...........

That question will be answered next Tuesday!

I am hoping for 650ish HP with torque over 600.

Open to all educated (and not so educated ) guesses.

Ran it today with the Dynomax mufflers, really liked the sound, hoping for good results on the dyno.
