396 heads

I have heads #3872702 (.98 cc) and 3917215 ...
Iím getting conflicting cc's for 3917215 (100.9 and 109)
My question is, can these heads be mixed on a 396 ??

Re: 396 heads

What a head's combustion chamber volume was supposed to be 50 years ago isn't really that useful. Who knows what the heck has happened to them over the last half-century? Surfaced how many times? Angle milled (back when people thought that was a good idea)? No substitute for actually measuring what you've got. Measuring factory spec cc measurement isn't great if you have valve seats that are pounded into the head, etc.

Re: 396 heads

I cc'd my 69 063's and they were between 98-99 cc's and even if they're close in cc they probably don't flow the same, just a guess, 215 & 063 heads are about the same, factory was 100.9 cc

my old 68 chevy truck had a 520 power pak head on one side and a late model smog head on the other. it always ran decent. I'm sure there was at least a 10cc difference. jim

Re: 396 heads

Have you eyeballed the combustion chambers yourself??

The 702's are a closed chamber and the 215's are what is sometimes called a modified closed chamber.

The 702 might have been relieved to match the 215 if they were used together previously.

Thanks
Randy

I had the same thing on a 74 Corvette I had for a while. One head was an 882, and the other was some other number, I don't recall. Apparently at some point in the cars life, one or the other head was replaced. The chambers looked similar, and the car ran ok, but I elected to replace both heads since I was doing a valve job anyway. I still have them.

Ideas are like children: there are none so wonderful as your own.

Re: 396 heads

Many of us, me included, have had mis matched heads for some reason.

You'll never notice the difference in how the Engine runs.

I was pointing out the difference as it's easy to see.

Thanks
Randy
