I am positive that I installed the seal correctly and even used rtv in the areas that Philip showed in the picture that he submitted. When I go through the effort of removing the engine, then the oil pan, windage tray, oil pump and bearing cap, which is a big job by one guy in his garage, I made sure what the correct installation procedeure was before I ever started the job.
It has been maybe 4 or 5 years since i removed the seal installed during the engine rebuild and installed the new seal. Guess I could go back through my receipts and find out when I did this swap.
The car sees limited use, however it didnt leak originally after I changed the seal, so I thought I had the leak licked. It only reappeared after some use. That has me wondering what some other possibilities could be.
So to review I used a good quality seal. I believe it was a Fel Pro.I did not install it backwards, I used fresh rtv in all the spots required, I offset the seal into the halves and I covered the face of the seal with assembly lube after installation, torqued the bearing cap bolts/windage tray studs and oil pan bolts to correct torque upon reinstallation.

Re: Rear Main Leaking Again

You have two post going on in this forum, oil leak and a crooked flywheel. Is it possible that the flywheel is the cause of this problem?? Vibration???

Re: Rear Main Leaking Again

No the post about the flywheel is with a brand new flywheel. The engine has never been run with that flywheel on it. Until a few days ago my engine had it original 69 GM flywhell on it. As a matter of fact that is how I confirmed where the oil was coming from when I removed the original flywheel to install the new flywheel.
