1994 Cavalier 2.2 Question

My question is.. Can a small radiator leak cause engine temp to increase even though the leak is not a drip just alittle and burns off the radiator before dripping on the ground?

kicks on when the gauge needle is in the middle.. thermostat been replaced as well as the water pump..I may try the temp sending unit
