2013 GMC 2500 Duramax 120 PSI pegged oil pressure reading

Does anyone have information on fixing this. The gauge is pegged at 120 PSI while driving and even with the engine off and key on.This isn't my truck, my cousin saw this warning while he was driving and stopped at a parts store. He tried replacing the oil filter and the 120 never dropped even after replacing the filter.
It didn't drop to 0 like it would normally when you change the oil, didn't even flicker. I know he should put a known good gauge on it but he doesn't have one.Anything else he can try ? he's all the way down the shore so I can only help him over the phone and the net.
I know we have some Duramax owners on TC,does anyone have any experience with this problem or the solution ?

If it is pegged at 120 with the engine turned off then it is not a problem with the engine, it is a problem with the gauge. No need to get a mechanical gauge etc etc. There is no oil pressure when the engine is not running so it should read zero.

First thing I would probably do is unplug the sending unit and turn the key on and see what happens. I dont have a wiring diagram here to look at to offer any other suggestions. If he can find someone with a scanner that can see what the computer is seeing from the sensor that would also help. Its all basic troubleshooting but you have to have the tools and a wiring diagram to check stuff. Or you can throw a bunch of un-needed parts at it It could be anything from a bad sending unit, a wire grounding out, a bad computer or a bad gauge.

I change a lot of sending units in gas motors for the same issue. Wouldn't doubt the diesel has the same issue.

98-06ish? GMs had a BAAAADDD problem with the stepper motors in the gauge clusters going bad.

If it's staying pegged with the key off it may be the stepper motor.

As correctly stated above it could also be the sending unit, I too have replaced several of them. As Bill said, unplug the sensor and see if the gauge goes to 0 with key on engine off.

Re: 2013 GMC 2500 Duramax 120 PSI pegged oil pressure reading

This is the biggest part of this problem he's having is he's down the shore about a little less than a hundred miles away.he will get the truck up here and I'll help him fix it.I said to try unplugging the OPSU but he couldn't find it under the hood or from underneath.
Now that he's a little surer that it's an electrical or sender/sensor problem he's going to drive it up here and I can help him with it. Thank you for all the reply's.

Bill this is the kind of gauge I was talking about :

https://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/otc...0-P116515.aspx

When a car would come into the shop with a complaint that the dashboard gauge wasn't working the first thing was to verify that the oil pressure was OK by using a known good gauge and that link above is similar to the gauge set with adapters that I have in my tool box that got used on dozens of cars throughout the years. That is a tool that most mechanics have in their tool box or at the least a garage where they worked would have one so that there's no guess work involved.Just want to set the record straight of what I meant.

Yes they did, I bought a kit and replaced all the stepper motors when I owned a 03 Silverado. Most of them had gone crazy when I got around to the fix.
