1962 Impala Wiring Question

Hey guys,

I have been helping my brother in law with his impala. It has a 350 non-original and a th350 trans. HEI distributor. The alternator has a 1 stud and a plug with 2 wires coming out of it. We are in the process of sorting out the original harness, but I was wondering if any of you guys had a simple diagram of how we can wire it to test fire it? Also, a simple wiring diagram of how the alternator, starter, and distributor need to be wired for final wiring. Thanks guys.

Re: 1962 Impala Wiring Question

The only wire you need just to test fire the motor is a hot wire going to the HEI.

Re: 1962 Impala Wiring Question

As said above you just need full 12v to the batt terminal on the HEI and jumper the starter. Need a picture of the connector on your alternator to tell which you have. Whether an internal or external regulator. The wiring on these cars is very basic.

Your just jealous because you can't hear the voices!

Re: 1962 Impala Wiring Question

I agree, The hot post on the Batt. to the hot post on the HEI. The HEI also has a Tach. post. One piece of wire, With alligator clips attached.

In " Your Year " A.I.M. you will find all the correct wiring diagrams. A lot of G.M. wiring ( across the board) is the same and a lot may be different DEPENDING on year & Model.

Re: 1962 Impala Wiring Question

I believe a generator was standard in 1962, 63's had alternators.

Not unless it was upgraded. Which plug does it look like?

Re: 1962 Impala Wiring Question

Maybe this will help. That wiring is a fire looking for a place to start. I'm sure you already knew that. Don't rush starting the engine. Fix the wiring so you are good to go when it is running.

Re: 1962 Impala Wiring Question

That alternator connector is for a internal regulated alternator that makes it a little easier to wire up.
For the record alternator connector stacked on top of each other is external regulated.
Alternator connectors sitting next to each other is internally regulated.

Some/most 62's with 327's came with alternators from the factory, but no matter, the one you have on there now has an internal regulator.

Re: 1962 Impala Wiring Question

We plan on updating the wiring, but I didn't want to start taking it apart until I knew exactly where everything was supposed to land. So, since it is internally regulated you guys have any tips on where everything on that particular piece is supposed to be connected? One of those wire is an exciter wire right?

Re: 1962 Impala Wiring Question

Does your car still have an external regulator wired up? If so there needs to be some changes made first.
