Power steering freaks out

70 chevelle ss 396 with saginaw power steering gear box. I have two different power steering pumps and have tried them both. when the engine runs the steering wheel turns violently to the left and locks there, it will even kill the engine. I rebuilt the gearbox pretty successfully i think and cleaned all fluid from the pump. tried filling it again and running it. Same result. Improperly adding fluid/bleeding or something else?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks

Therein lies your problem LOL. I have had steering boxes act in a similar manner many years ago. Replacing them solved the problem.

Re: Power steering freaks out

Got it, thanks for the quick replies. I'll be on the look out for a new one. For the record it did this prior to installing the rebuild kit as well.

Is the pitman arm clocked correctly on the output shaft? Almost sounds like itís off 90 deg (if thatís even possible)

Re: Power steering freaks out

Well it would be easy enough to verify. With the engine off, jack the front end of the car up. Center the pitman arm so itís pointed straight towards the firewall. You should be able to turn the steering wheel an equal amount of turns from center to left and center to right. If not then the pitman arm is not centered. But honestly itís been so long since I messed with one of those I canít remember for sure if you could even install it off center or if it has a hard index on the shaft. Regardless if it passes this test then I would agree the gear box needs to be replaced.

he's got a POS in the valve or the torsion bar is broke. My wifes' grandmas 70 Impala did this while we were eating in a restaurant,. Had to hang on to it tight with both hans to get it home. It's still the on;ly I've ever seen that did that.
