Aligned my 69 today.

I installed UMI uppers and did a rough home alignment today, and I think it went pretty well. I managed to get +5.5 caster, -.5 camber and 1/16 total toe according to the longacre racing gauge I bought for caster/camber, and the string method for toe, double checked with an old manco toe stick I bought from J.C. Whitney 30 years ago. It'll probably be a month or so before I can road test it though.

My one question is how much of a difference in shim packs can you have? The driver's side is pretty even, but to get the caster on the passeger side, I had to use more shims at the rear of the A arm. I have a little more than a half inch of shims at the back, and 1/8" at the front. The car was hit in that corner somewhere in it's life, so I'm assuming it is having an affect.

Shims shouldn’t really matter as long the alignment went ok. Did you do a certain tire degrees in and out to get your caster reading?

Re: Aligned my 69 today.

Yeah, the gauge paperwork states to go 20 degrees out, zero the end bubble and the caster bubble, then go 20 degrees in (40 total from zero). I put some pieces of plastic I cut from a metro rack under the tires so they would turn easy. The UHP summer compound didn't want to budge otherwise.

The biggest issue is making sure your adjustments are made off the centerline of the frame and that the wheelbase is square. If thatís true, I would not worry about the shim distribution.

People donít like to have to think in high resolution. Jordan Peterson. Thatís why we are forced in to so many binary choices.
