Vin transposed? Guess it is the same car and all is ok?

So I ran a national vehicle history report...think I found that my 66 SS car came to Missouri from Wisconsin...but...notice the vin:
Wisconsin 138716A116722 06/21/2001 EXEMPT
My vin is 138176A116722
Called NMVTIS...they pull from state data bases and have no other info
Called Wisconsin DMV...they are awesome by the way...they do not have my correct vin in their records, but have their incorrect vin and show the title was transferred to Missouri. Almost got the name of the Wisconsin owner...dang!
They required no physical verification of numbers when the car was titled in 2001...and have no paper files from then.
Missouri has my vin...nothing about the Wisconsin one...no idea how someone transferred a title with the wrong number to one that is correct...but I have a title with the correct number.

The Wisconsin vin matches nothing I can find. So do I just assume a clerical error was made and this was the same car? It did pull that number into the report I ran so I am hopeful all is good.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks,

Brian
If I am good and anyone knows someone who owned a 66SS in Wisconsin from June 21 of 2001 through August 26 2016 please put me in contact! Was sandalwood tan...now vermillion red

13817 is the Model Designation for your 1966 SS396. There never was a Model Designation of "13871". You are good, it was a simple clerical error by WI DMV.

How do you run a "national vehicle history report"?

Discovered that from a post from jeffschevelle....

Enter the vin in the box and click it. I ran your vin and it shows has having a title transfer or registration issued in 2005, so the car was still alive at that point, hopefully it is still around! You can purchase the report for $4.95. It will not tell you who owns it, but it will tell you what state that 2005 transaction took place in so you will know where it was last titled, which is a start.

I checked my VIN... I still own the car, was registered and insured last year (now on non-op, but still insured), been in the family since 1985... Nothing...

"Sorry, no matching record was found for VIN 138176Z1XXXXX"

Back in my car dealer days the local license branch would "correct" up to three digits on a title simply on my say so. Anything more than that, they had a police officer inspect the vin. Errors (dyslexia?) made by the DMV are more common than many people know.

Dealer title folks and the DMV are not perfect, I had one truck that had the wrong VIN on the title when I received it, went to the dealer tag and title folks and they fixed it. I'm sure it happens more that folks realize, good luck!!

I got the same thing when I searched my VIN. I've owned it since 1988 and it has been insured/registered every day I've had it. Maybe records don't go back that far?

Re: Vin transposed? Guess it is the same car and all is ok?

I believe the NMVTIS system just picks up title transfers, title branding (when the brand is added) such as flood or total loss or salvage, and registration transactions which reflect a change in ownership or title status (for example in states where the registration also serves as the evidence of title on older cars, like NY).
