Re: Warranty engine replacement

If you can't tell me who Thomas is that is fine. I don't think I will be looking through old posts to find out who he is, I could care less. You are right , that would be a rare car if the original engine was still in it. Too bad but a big block El Camino is still fun.

Re: Warranty engine replacement

IIRC, a CE engine could be anything from a bare block to a short block to possibly a long block. Don't worry about the Thomas', they are the jealous ones.

Yes we talked about this before as there some doubting Thomas's about the authenticity of this vehicle
Stamped or cast? L 8 70 is December 8, 1970 so the block was probably assembled in 71 as noted by the CE 1

That was what I came up with after the decoding
makes sense on this 1970 396
The date code was cast not stamped as mentioned misspoke
it's still a 396(402)375 hp with correct aluminum heads as ordered
I have asked before how many of the 18 produced are still out there

Correct. Many assume its could be a complete engine but that is rarely the case. Good parts from the failed engine were transferred the warranty parts. Heads, oil pan, water pump etc. Chevy only replaced what was damaged.

A "Doubting Thomas" is kind of like a "nay-sayer" or were you being facetious?

Re: Warranty engine replacement

On occasion ,and varried by dealer ,a warranty replacement block/short block/long block may have a dealer stamp on the starter mount flange which duplicated the original engine id code.
Again,on occasion,not always as a missing stamp doesn't mean it wasn't a warranty replacement.

Re: Warranty engine replacement

I don't think there is anyone doubting what the op has. He owns a car that was rare when new but no longer has it's original engine and now has a replacement engine of the same type as original. No longer a rare car but still fun all the same. If he goes to sell it he may get some extra $$ for what it was but to a collector not so much.

Re: Warranty engine replacement

GM had a five year fifty thousand mile warranty back then so had to be able to supply warranty replacement engines for five years from new. Our 396 car had a CE replacement short block as well. The original owner told me about it when I met him. The L72 and L78 cars could turn beyond 7K rpm but the valve springs were not up to the task of keeping the valve in contact with the rest of the valve train and was actually free falling shut at high rpm. Do it too often and this eventually would pound the keepers right through the retainers, dropping the valve and usually windowing the cylinder wall as was the case with our car. Even the L88 springs were that little bit beefier that they would have eliminated most of the problem had people known. Even with the CE short block, we still got decent money for our car.
