69 Chevelle SS396 Code 72 or 76 ??

Hey guys, I was looking at a 1969 Chevelle SS396. Is it true that in 69 an SS396 was only available with paint code 72 Monaco/Hugger Orange and paint code 76 Daytona Yellow ??? Anyone add any info on this ?? Thank you very much.

'69 SS was available in any color. From my understanding, if it is a 72 car, then it was originally an SS. Not sure about the Daytona Yellow cars.

No, it's not true. As Brian noted the SS could be had in any color available at the time. The Hugger/Monaco Orange (paint code 72) and Daytona Yellow (paint code 76) were only available when the SS396 option was ordered. Either color was still a $42.15 option though. The same colors could be had on any 1969 Chevelle but would be ordered under RPO ZP3, special paint, and would not have the 72 or 76 paint code on the trim tag.

Re: 69 Chevelle SS396 Code 72 or 76 ??

It may be reasonable to believe that the COPO Chevelles were treated as SS models since they did not have the body side moldings being special order. I still feel the L on the trim tags at the Baltimore and Kansas City plants is related to the SS option and maybe body prep i.e no malibu trim/badging. As discussed the 72 and 76 codes were available with the Z25 option and could be special ordered for non-Z25 bodies. I think special order opens a whole new discussion of what GM did or didn't allow. just my thoughts.....
