'68 Rear Axle Date Code Quandry?

OK, so I picked up this '68 el Camino recently, very straight and solid car, mostly original, engine (L35 396/325) definitely casting and stamped numbers match up, but have a quandary about the rear.

COWL tag show car built 3rd week of December 1967 (12 C), rear is stamped "CW 0103 B" which is January 3rd, 3.31 open. Casting date is "L 5 7" which is December 5, 1967.

So could this be the original rear?

I have heard that it is possible due to the Christmas Holidays?

'68 el Camino SS 396/325hp, 4 Speed, 3.31, Buckets, AC
'75 el Camino SS, 400 SB, 200R4, 3.42 LSD, AC, Swivel Buckets, PW, PDL
'87 el Camino SS 305 TPI, 200R4, 3.73 LSD
'87 Buick Grand National (Hardtop, Bucket Seats)

Yes, I think so because the plant shut down for the holidays. Probably your vehicle sat on the Assembly line over Christmas Shutdown. (typically last two weeks of December) Kinda cool when you think about it, the body never left Fisher Body plant till the new year.

Here's where my disconnect with that is:

If the COWL tag says the car was built 3rd week of December, wouldn't the rear have to be under the frame at that point to put the body on during that week? If so, then how can the rear be stamped as being built that 2 weeks after the car build date?

Not necessarily. Because of Christmas vacation shutdown, assembly plants don't empty the production lines. Everything stops in place and resumes when holiday is over. It's possible the cowl tag was applied to the body before the frame was 'married' to it, and also possible the axle had not yet been assembled to the frame.

If I recall correctly , the trim tag was applied to the body before it left FB plant. I could be wrong, if so someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in. Terry
