#s stamped on tail pan?

I am currently building a 68 Convertible and cooincidently a buddy of mine is building one also. He just showed me a stamping on the tail pan area (not sure if thats what its called) its the area where the trunk or deck lid sits at the rear of the car. He would like to know what it means as it doesn't match any other # on the car. I haven't been home to see if mine has this. Can you tell me what it is?

Re: #s stamped on tail pan?

Looks like a VIN stamp to me.. does it match the VIN tag?? If not, I'd be looking for other hidden stamps like on the firewall under the heater box..

Authentication and pre-purchase inspection service still available. PM me for more information.

Re: #s stamped on tail pan?

Before I replaced the quarter panels on my 66 I noticed the same numbers. Mine matched the car series. If yours do not then either the quarters were replaced with donor's or the serial numbers on the vehicle have been changed. I noted this in my albums posted on this website.
