Re: Hideous Gulf Green Chevelle

Post Christmas update: Bump. 72' Malibu to HC "tribute is in final stages of blocking. Picked up a set of doors out of Redding California and made the switch on the passenger side after finding more filler than I liked. Rebuilt window channels, lower rear quarters and new OE drivers front fender. Hood is an AMD SS domed, trunk lid and hood are ready to paint. Going with #43 "Citrus Green Poly" with clear and white HC body decals. HC door panels ordered.

Looking forward to the pics!

I predict your car will be the equivalent to asking the wallflower girl to the prom and when you pick her up in her new prom dress she will knock your socks off!

I agree with Ron above... I told someone else here earlier that went with a non-traditional color on their Chevelle, that your car will stand out in the sea of many but for the right reasons... I'm glad you are going with that color, I would have, she'll be a real eye catcher!

My 71 Malibu is Cottonwood Green and I'm amazed at the number of people that have commented on how nice the color is and how different it is than your red, blue or black Chevelles.

Re: Hideous Gulf Green Chevelle

Thanks for the supporting comments guys, I know when you do something like this it can be perceived in many different ways. Believe me, I like the numbers game, but this one is just for fun. Short of the VIN and rubber floor mats, it will be a fair representation of a 72' Heavy. (Tribute, may be a better word). I have a 402 and M20 that may make it in the build. Right now the original smalley is running so good, I'm inclined to leave it as is and drive for a year or so. Got the Heavy door/side panels too.

Re: Hideous Gulf Green Chevelle

A few update photos, shop (friends) was cold and lights were not cooperating much. Better photos coming, out in the sunlight. Rebuilt window rear channels, lower quarters both sides rear, new AMD hood, all emblem holes welded in, Was going to try putting clear over Heavy decal set, but ran into some problems on test, so putting decals on top of clear, could be handy in a few years.

Re: Hideous Gulf Green Chevelle

72' ZJ7 Rally's are cleaned up and powder coated, w/ bright lug nuts. Chassis has been gone through, rebuilt the 10 bolt peg-leg w/ 3:36 Yukon Dura-grip posi, American alloy axels and all new bushings. Changed to boxed factory control arms and after market rear sway bar. Working on the 72'-U14 dash now, correct w/ seat belt warning light. Keeping the 350 in this car, it runs so good, pulls strong, well matched components. #3984555 Rally Center caps being powder coated now.

Re: Hideous Gulf Green Chevelle

I look forward to seeing this car when completed. I recall chuckling at the Heavy Chevys when they first showed up in dealers' lots. I think they are pretty cool now, as is the concept of an entry level performance car. Many young guys couldn't afford the payments (or insurance) on an SS Chevelle.

Re: Hideous Gulf Green Chevelle

I have a dark green Camaro that was a similar light green originally. I agree it's pretty bad. I had a 66 Chevelle that was originally butternut yellow then brown, blue and finally white. Still sad I moved on from that car. Waa.

Yea, I started out not too much of a fan of this green (#43 Gulf Green), however futher exploring and with the help of some of the TC crew (Levon), I soon discovered #43 Citrus Green Poly, Canada Color). Much brighter, still matches the data plate color and really goes with the period of this car. If you read through the whole thread you'll see, quite the migration.

PS: Always liked Butternut on an original car.

I'm with ya there, my first Heavy sighting was in High school and I though : "WTH?" What kind of muscle car has rubber floormats? Insurance was the real driving economic factor back then.
