69 SS 396/325 Auto

I have a co-worker who has been telling me about his Chevelle for the last 5 years or so but until now I didn't believe he even owned one, lol. He is part owner with someone else, they used to race it back in the 80's. The two have decided to sell (hasn't been out of mom's garage in 20+ years). From what I am told the car is in very good shape and with a little work could be up and running in a few days. I told him where to look for the build sheet and he came up with a few pieces of paper out of the front seat. Maybe someone could be so kind as to help me decode this for him? He is also telling me that the numbers on the engine pad do match the last digits in the vin. Would an SS car come with a 10 bolt rear? I think once I get him some info he may actually let me come out and check the car and take some pics. This guy is more than a little strange so we will have to see.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 69 SS 396/325 Auto

Interesting car, it was ordered with the M40 auto and a 4.10 posi rear behind a 325hp 396! Maybe the buyer planned on pulling the motor or stuffing some goodies in it and heading to the track.

Re: 69 SS 396/325 Auto

I know these two are the 3rd owners and did drag the car, not sure if previous owners did or not. What else can be had from the partial sheet?

Thanks

Re: 69 SS 396/325 Auto

The partial build sheet is for a Manual trans car. JA engine code is a manual trans 325 HP 396 enigine. XC is for an M20 trans. Some of the RPOs can be read but some are only partial, these are the RPOs that are listed there would be more on the rest of the build sheet, Framington Chevelles normally have the partial sheets;
A51 Front Strato-bucket seat
Box 10= 49 03-28 or 05-28 schedule number and date
Box 11= XK-standard SS frame
Box 26= B Black
Box 27 Eng= JA 396/325 hp Manual Trans
Box 28 Trans= XC- M20 4-speed
Box 29 Axle= KK 4.10 ratio HD rearend
Box 42 Trim= 756 Black vinyl bucket seat interior
Box 43 Color= LW 71- lower exterior color Lemans Blue
UP B-Upper Exterior color Black Vinyl Top
St=steering column-blank=Black
W=Wheel 71 Lemans Blue common for the Framington plant to enter the body color here
Box 45 Wheels= YA SS wheels
Box 107
B22 SS 396 DR Emblem
B79 SSS 396 EXT Ornmt
B80 Roof Drip Mldgs
B95 R/End Pnl Mldg
B96 R Whl Open Mldg
C08 Vinyl roof covering
C24 Windshield Wipers, concealed
D55 Console, front compartment
F40 Suspension, heavy duty front & rear
G80 Positraction (all ratios)
G84 4.10 ratio Positraction only
J50 Brakes, power
J52 Brakes, front disc
L35 325-hp Turbo-Jet 396 cu.in. V-8

If you feel this is the sheet for the body in question it should be an original manual shift body, also the build sheet portions do not have any numbers that would aid identifying it with the specific body. Not sure if it is a matching build sheet portion to the body. If you have the cowl/body tag and VIN info I can check my list to see if they fall near the dates listed on the sheet. you can PM or email me if you don't want to post the info. hope this helps take it easy Andy

Why do you believe the car has a 10 bolt rear? Be aware that the piece of the build sheet you see does not have a VIN on it. There have been many instances where one car's build sheet ends up in another car. Therefore, get all the numbers (engine block casting date, engine assembly date, transmission codes, rear end codes, etc., etc., etc.) and check them out.

Re: 69 SS 396/325 Auto

I tried to edit my comment, was mistaking the F40 for M40, my bad. I saw the JA in box 27 but was thinking "instrument code". It's interesting the 4.10 could be ordered behind a wide ratio trans.

Re: 69 SS 396/325 Auto

Andy, thanks so much for all the info. I will forward it to the owner and hopefully check out the car in person this week. I wish I were in a better position to purchase this car because it seems as though it would be a great candidate for a restoration. The owner told me that there is a 10 bolt under it but it doesn't seem like he is much of a car guy, think he was just along for the ride with his buddy. I will post pics once I see it and check for some actual number. My buddy did say that he thought this was the only paper in the car, so you say this may only have a partial sheet to begin with? Thanks again.

I did tell him that the important part of the paper, the vin was missing. I am 99% sure this is the right paper because everything from the color to the engine is the same. I will know more when I see it in person.

Re: 69 SS 396/325 Auto

Yes, unfortunately it seems that the Framington MA assembly plant line workers used portions of the build sheet for what ever they were doing..the really bad part of this is if it isn't the right hand portion you won't be able to match it up to the body since the key numbers (VIN, Fisher Body no#) appeared on the right hand side....once you have the numbers from the trim tag or the vin i may be able to tell you if they line up with the date that is on the sheet you have but itwon't be proof the sheet belongs to the body in question....could be one from before or after the body you have. There are examples of chevele owners finding other chevelle build sheets and portions in different bodies. remember there was no requirement for these docs to be left in the car. look forward to more info on this as it unfolds...take care Andy

Re: 69 SS 396/325 Auto

The engine is from a Baltimore chevelle around a 07A or 07A build, not original to the Framingham chevelle with that VIN. The JC code is a 350 HP 396 manual trans. Any chance you got a pic of the body tag, I'd like to add the info if possible, that chevelle VIN G338228 was reported in March and is likely a 03C or 03D build. Looks like an interesting car. take care, Andy

Re: 69 SS 396/325 Auto

Thanks for the info Andy. What do you mean that VIN was reported in March?

This car does have a 10 bolt rear with ladder bars. The guys bought it from the original owner back in 79 and raced it in 81 (only 5 passes at Lancaster Dragway). This car was also manual originally but the tranny is long gone. Floors and trunk have little to no rust but there seems to be bondo in the rear quarter. Can't tell if there is any in the rockers.

So...car is up for sale, I'm first up and he offered for $6500. They are convinced its a real SS but I'm not 100%.

Interesting one calls the M40 a wide ratio trans. FWIW, many an M40 optioned 70 LS6 was ordered with 4.10:1 gear as well.
