Question 66 Chevelle SS

Joe (owner) and I know this car has been re-powered; bought from a dealer who bought it from the widow of the guy who repowered it.

Joe suspects it's a 454, but it's also been modified with Edelbrock headers.

The only clue we have is 731 chalked on the firewall about where you'd find the id tag.

Does this mean anything? Related to CID?

Paul,
The 731 probably indicates the interior trim info. Are the seats buckets? The 731 is for a Dark Blue Imitation Leather (Bucket Seats). The only way to find out what engine it is, is to look at the numbers on the front passenger side of the engine (on a pad below cylinder head) and post the numbers on here for somebody to decode.

Re: 66 Chevelle SS

Yeah, bucket seats, but not dark blue imitation leather. The interior is yellow, just like the exterior.

I think the previous owner had his share of fun with modifications. Unfortunately, his widow unloaded the car on a dealer, which is where Joe bought the car.

Oh, I said that already! Being an old fart is so much fun!

Yellow interior was not available in 66. It's obviously not original.

Didn't even think of the first 3 numbers of the VIN. If it's a 138 VIN, then the '66 would be the SS396.

The VIN tag is in the door jamb between the hinges.

The Trim Tag on the firewall does have the model designation numbers also, but not the complete VIN.

Such as 66-13817

Re: 66 Chevelle SS

Remember though, the Fisher Body Style number has nothing to do with the VIN. They happen to match most of the time but not always on a Chevelle; even less on other GM makes like 67-69 Camaros.

Re: 66 Chevelle SS

I'm not sure the VIN is going to be a lot of help -- we KNOW the last owner repowered, and we're pretty sure he didn't stop there. Next time I'm over there, I'll get the VIN and see about getting the block number.

I'll also double-check my feeble mind and see if I keep calling it a '66 when it's a '69.

Then the VIN plate isn't going to be on the driver side A-pillar but rather on top of the dash on the driver's side and visible through the windshield. Since the SS Equipment was now an option the VIN isn't going to show anything other than a Malibu or 300 Deluxe.

Exclamation Re: 66 Chevelle SS

OK, folks, beep beep back up the truck.

It's a '69, not a '66. And the cruise-in rumor was the little old man whose widow unloaded it on the dealer; the real story is the car came to CT from the midwest and was sold to the dealer at auction.

Two things we know -- it's not the original mill, and it's not the original interior.

We'll check the block number after fixing the steering, and as we get ambitious enough for sanding and reading backwards in a mirror in tight places.
