1971 Rear end code CHK

There is a unrestored silver 1971 SS402 19,000. car on ebay #300477985652 at present. I am familiar with this car as well into the 90's it was local to me and basically untouched. There is a photo of POP with CLB engine code, and a CHK116E rear end code. Does not appear to be a CHK code listed for 71 in any reference material and present owner claims it to be 3.55 ratio. Options etc. on this car can also be verified through GM of Canada as it was built and sold here. Any thoughts.

CH 2.73 ~ 12-bolt Positraction (L48/350-4)*
K McKinnon Industries (GM of Canada)
It could be any ratio now.

I never make mistakes, but on occasion I present myself with an opportunity to get very creative.

Re: 1971 Rear end code CHK

The casting number on the current rear end is from a 1969. Hard to tell what gear ratio is in the car now. The original, according to the POP, was a 2.73 Positraction; the "K" in CHK the sequence is for McKinnon Industries. The 71 model year POP's varried in their layout. Typical POPs in previous years had the engine code and rear end code on line 2 and transmission code on line 3.

All U.S. 1971 plants (at least Arlington, Baltimore, Kansas City, and Van Nuys POPs I've seen) have engine and transmission codes on line 2 with the rear end code on line 3. This being an Oshawa car seems to be like 1970 style POPs.

The 3-letter coding itself does vary on U.S. plants though. Some (like Arlington) have the assembly plant first followed by the 2-letter ID code such a CRU for Buffalo (C), 3.31:1 ratio (RU) followed by the date and possibly a letter for shift or Positraction while some (like KC and Van Nuys) will list the 2-letter ID code followed by the plant such as GNC where GN is the ratio 3.08:1 and C is the Buffalo plant.

This is the first 1971 Oshawa POP I've seen but I don't see anything particularly wrong with it. CHK would be a 2.73 Positraction, K is McKinnon Industries, 116 the Julian date of April 26 and E to identify an Eaton Positraction unit. With an engine date of March 22, transmission date of March 19, and body date of 4D, it's not out of line.

{Edit} POP is formatted like a 1970 U.S. plant POP. I also notice the power steering on the car isn't coded on the POP with a "1" in the first position of options and the first "1" coded is for power brakes which it has.
