1967 Chevelle

I am looking at a 1967 Chevelle 327 / 275 hp supposedly all original. There is no stamp on the engine pad and owner states that some production plants did not use stamps. Is this correct? Thanks.

Until January of 1968 when it became a federal mandate, generally only 396cid engines and the 327/325 L79 got a partial VIN stamp. Has nothing to do with different plants. My 67 327/275 doesn not have a partial VIN stamp.

So there is NO way to determine if the engine is original to the car. Clues such as correct suffix code, engine date before the car date, etc. are good signs but not proof positive. You can check my web page at http://chevellestuff.net/1967/engine_id_codes.htm to decode the engine ID.

When seller says "all original" just how original is that? No interior replacements, no repaints, no swapping the cast iron intake and Rochester for an Edelbrock intake and carb?

One area to double check for a repaint is between the rear cove upper trim and the trunk. Malibus and SS396 Chevelles got a blacked out treatment in this area. Repaints more often than not overlook this area and paint it body color.

Ask questions, here and of the owner, to ensure you're getting what you think.
