68 396

I scored a 1968 396 shortblock this morning.
Some of my reference books are loaned out, hate to say it.
A quick internet look showed the ED suffix for 1968 being
Chevelle Manual Trans 325 horse.
Are there other applications with ED for 68?
I am asking because the seller said "from grandpa's pick-up" and it had truck oil pan loosely on it....but over the years, anything could have been swapped.

Might have someone's engine here....
Vehicle assembly plant is K (no time to look this up)
Casting date looks like B/16/8 starter side of block
Assy T0226ED (Wow! out of the furnace, into the machine shop and assembly 10 days, not all work days either!)
Vin looks like 1K175xx7 (two digits withheld for now)
2-bolt w/nodular crank, cast factory pop-up 325/350 horse slugs
This looks like it will only require a cylinder clean-up and basic refresh, not a rebuild. I will disassemble it tomorrow...off to work now

Who has the list of owners looking for orphan engines?

George, I found an identical engine for my '68 project a couple of years ago. As far as I could tell, the ED suffix was unique to the Chevelle that year.

Assy T0226ED (Wow! out of the furnace, into the machine shop and assembly 10 days, not all work days either!)
The '66 Corvette I owned for several years had the original 327/350 horse engine in it. The casting date was C 28 6 and the engine pad was stamped F0329. I figured it was the last block loaded on the truck that day, and the first one off the next day.

Re: 68 396

Rich,

Wow! Quick turn around on your engine for sure!

I posted the engine to the orphan site. Good luck, hope I can reunite the engine with the car.
