Re: Block, Trans VIN match?

OK, I thought it looked a little odd. I have never seen one quite like that before.

Red 1967 Chevelle SS 396, 4 speed, 3.31 12 bolt posi, black bench seat interior, Bolero Red - long term restoration project
68 Camaro SS - 468 BBC, 781 heads, RPM Air Gap intake, Lakewood bellhousing, M21, BO coded 12 bolt - but 3.31 posi now. Old drag car, back on the street.

Re: Block, Trans VIN match?

The assembly code does match up with the POP and is a nice clean stamp.

Here is the assembly code from the axel tube with the KM 4.56:1 prefix and 1130 date that matches the POP.

Re: Block, Trans VIN match?

Pat,

I went back and looked at all of the pictures of your car. NICE. My uncle bought a very very similar car when he got back from Vietnam. Same color. 327 with 4 speed. I don't remember if it was an L79 car (probably not) but it ran good.

I would not worry about the area on the transmission with the partial VIN stamp that looks a little odd. Maybe the casting mold just did not get completely filled, or whatever. That is probably the way it left the factory, since everything else looks normal.

Does anybody know about how many 1967 L79 Chevelles would have had the KM coded rear with 4.56 gears? Probably not very many.

There is no way to know, GM did not save such statistics. We know how my L79s, we know how many KM 12-bolts, we just don't know how many with the combination of both (or any other combination you can think of).

Rich,

OK, how many KM 12 bolts? Probably a pretty low number?

Re: Block, Trans VIN match?

I'm not sure figures are known on any 4.xx series rear ends. The Tailfins & Bowties documents I saw (where all reportedly GM option quantities sold are shown) do not list any 4.10, 4.56 or 4.88 gear options in 1967, or 64-68 for that matter).

There are specific numbers reported for 1969 but that seems to be the only year.

From 1970 thru 72, no specific ratios are shown but rather items like "YD1 Axle for Trailering" and "ZQ9 Rear Axle - Performance Ratio" but no specifics.

Re: Block, Trans VIN match?

This would have been a fairly complicated dealer order with the 4.56:1 gear ratio and might have required some Zone approval prior to being an accepted order. On other Chevrolet model orders prior to 1969 a performance drive train combination such as this would not have been included as a standard check off box on the dealer order paperwork. The owner of this car did some research on available GM RPO's and knew what they wanted and why they wanted it. I'd guess very few L79's or SS 396's Will be documented with 4.56:1 ratios. This combination would not work well except with L79's or L78's IMO.

Re: Block, Trans VIN match?

I thought I'd update the progress on my car, she's in paint and the frame has been cleaned, detailed and painted and the short block is done...still standard bore! Most everything else is accounted for and the NOS trim and emblems are aquired and waiting for installation. I think we are over the hill and on the way back down on this project and hope to be under power in the Spring.
